Description The Imperial Guard relief force marched through the city gates with crowds of the native inhabitants looking on. But there was little cheering or celebrating.
The grim-looking army was not the angels of salvation that the people had thought they would be. Rather, they were silent, lifeless beings that spared the people not even a single glance as they marched by. The peoples faces grew nearly as dreary as the soldiers masks as they realized that their saviors were not like angels, but more like walking corpses.

But through the crowd of bleak and cheerless faces, a bright and sunny one appeared.
'Why is everyone so afraid of them,' she thought, 'when they're here to save us? We should be thankful.'
She leaned over the side and reached out to the nearest passing soldier, holding one of the summer flowers she had gathered.

'These are for someone else, but you can have one.' she said cheerfully.
The soldier hesitated for a moment, looking at the gift being presented to him, then he moved back into formation. He didn't take it, but she was sure that he wanted to.
Her grandmother frantically pulled her back and began scolding her. She didn't listen, she just put the flower back with the rest and stepped back, her smile unchanged.

The Kriegers deserve forgiveness from Big E at this point.

This is what they deserve. Not the Space Marines are the heroes of the Imperium but the Imperial Guard. Without their sacrifices even the Space Marines and every other faction in the Imperium would not be able to survive.

It's just so sad how many of them die every day.

This image creates so many feels, because you know the guardsman wants to take it, but he's probably thinking, "shit if I take that, the Commissar is gonna shoot me," so he just casually nods and steps back into formation.

this is great between the image and the story you wrote to describe it really speaks of many things depending on how you look at it, if you look at it negatively it shows delusion in the girl but the many positive ways are amazing of optimism, hope, finding the beauty even in the bleakest of settings and how a little bit of faith can make a difference I personally imagine that soldier going home at the end of the day and telling his family about her and how someone showing gratitude for the work he did every day made his day and made it all worth while even though every day was a slog.

Vox log: number 4-87872 guardsmen joris of the korps of krieg

when we arrived on Praxis 4 to relieve our cadian guardsmen, we were met with fear, our unit must have looked as if we were men of chaos...no matter who we were, we had our duty. but then she was there...a young woman...although not guardsmen material...had a bright cheery smile as if the emperor was with her...she reached out from the barrier and extended to me a flower..."these are for someone else but you can have one" Β i stopped for a moment...looked at the flower in almost shock...i wanted to accept her gift, but i didn't...i got back in line and noticed my kommisar watching. he smirked and continued on, it was pretty clear his message, the emperor saw that too...that girl gave me hope for humanity, for the emperor...and what our purpose is: protect the imperium of man and all innocent humans...like the girl

The emperor protects

I marched onwards, this parade of strength in this most dark world of ours. I consider the moments, the lives around me. They fear us, even as we have sacrificed so much for them, they are afraid.

In unison, we continue. Formation unceased and uniform. I saw her, in the crowd. Her smile, the sole example of gratitude towards the guard.

I neared her location, she reached out with a flower in thanks, though it was not destined to be mine. "You can have one she said"

I paused in my step and looked at the flower, my thoughts racing within, I knew I could not accept this gift, Yet I longed to do so.

After a moments thought, I turned and fell back into formation. This offering from a simple gardener, it lifts my heart to know that even in suffering, there would always be those who act in praise and love in spite of the fear around them.

I both love and pity the individuals....

"She looked at me, a smile on her face. That smile...perplexed me. In this bleak universe of war and suffering and endless savagery and destruction, what good is it to smile?

Even so, there was something about that smile, and the flower she offered, that made me feel better. All around me, these people we saved, FEARED us. But she didn't. She was welcoming us, showing us gratitude.

And as inexplicable as it is, I believed at that moment that it made the fight to liberate this planet all the more worthwhile."

BornOnTheNinth [2016-09-29 05:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Awwwww ....Β

As grim as they may appear, the Death Korps of Krieg are just as devoted to protecting humanity as the rest of The Imperial Guard. In fact it is precisely for that reason that they are so grim; they have been raised on a blasted out death world and taught since birth that their own lives don't matter and that they exist only to self-sacrifice for The Emperor.

It was sweet of that girl to try to give a flower to the Death Korp Guardsman. It's probably the first time in his entire life that anyone ever showed any kindness towards him. Hopefully his regiment gets the Right of Settlement so that soldier can stay on the planet and get a chance to thank that girl for her gratitude.

This is a good work of art. The facial expressions were well done (the sunny girl, her terrified grandmother), and I like how you contrasted the colorful clothing of the civilians with the black uniforms of the Death Korp Guardsmen. Well done!
