Description
Megalosaurus ('Great Lizard', from Greek, μεγαλο-/megalo- meaning 'big', 'tall' or 'great' and σαυρος/sauros meaning 'lizard') is a genus of large meat-eating theropod dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period of what is now southern England.Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur to be described. Part of a bone was recovered from a limestone quarry at Cornwell near Oxford, England in 1676. The fragment was sent to Robert Plot, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and first curator of the Ashmolean Museum, who published a description in his Natural History of Oxfordshire in 1677. He correctly identified the bone as the lower extremity of the femur of a large animal and he recognized that it was too large to belong to any known species; he considered it to be the thigh bone of a giant. The bone has since been lost but the illustration is detailed enough to identify it clearly as the femur of a Megalosaurus.

I've always been told that Megalosaurus was a "wastebasket" taxon...
Have they found any recent specimens?

No. The only unambiguous fossil of Megalosaurus is the lectotype dentary, so restorations like Brian's are going to be based a lot on other theropods. It is, however, diagnosed by an autapomorphy, according to Roger Benson's SVP recent poster on it.

It's GREAT to see you again. You've been quiet and I was wondering what had happened to you. However, the wait was worth it seeing this. ^_~

Thanks for your reply. I've been into other things, but it's time to get back into the dinosaur drawing again. :0)

I know I sounded selfish and you do have other things to do, but I just missed your art.

You're getting really good at inserting the animals into landscapes. Keep it up!
I have a book around here somewhere that has the story of the first Megalosaur bone that cracks me up every time I read it. Basically it was thought to be the petrified genitals of a giant such as the one in David and Goliath (because they related everything in science to the Bible back in the day). THey names it Scrotum humanum - and it just makes me giggle.
Of course it could be completely mangled and derived from many different outcomes, but seriously. That's some funny stuff!
Anywho...great rendering! I'd love to see a better quality scan of this guy...maybe a bit bigger so we can ogle at the details.
Take care!!

Yeah, I read that too. The fossil really does look like that. They even described the fossil: Scrodum.

Good to see you back on DA. Your understanding of theropod anatomy is improved. The lacrimal crests remind me of Allosaurus, do you think they were closely related?

I don't know. Maybe. Allosaurus was a really cool theropod. Did you ever see the documentry about Big Al? It was great. Thanks for shecking me out and it feels good to get back into this stuff again.

sorry, but guess what. I have very bad news and you'll never believe it.
I keep all my drawings protected in those 8x11 inch plastic sheet protectors enclosed in my binder. Well, one day I left the binder in the corner away from any type of damage harming them. My dog peed on the floor and the urine flowed towards the binder and all my drawings were detroyed----ALL of them. The drawing paper somehow sucked up the urine and stained 50% of all my drawings. Everyone was half stained.
And what really pissed me off is that all of these drawings were in the protective sheets of plastic. How could this happen?
So I can't resize any of them anymore. Sorry. They are officially ruined.

Holy f*ck! Scared me when it opened. The size is quite good, maybe I was wrong... maybe 1000xsomething would be approriate. How come you're not able to see yourself, what (size) looks good? The illustration does.
