Description
Infrared, 3 shot HDR merge.Hoya IR filter on Nikkor 17-35mm. Manfrotto tripod, remote shutter relese.
Kings River, Lower Paradise Valley, Kings Canyon National Park, California.
This is right by the backcountry campsite we stayed in for 2 nights of the trip.
For me, true freedom is to break free from limitation. To go beyond all references to what is and what is not. Letting go of everything, and just being.
Freedom is a hard thing to have, and it cannot be given to us. We must be able to realize it, and allow it to exist. If we try to latch onto it, or take a forceful attitude, we will never have true freedom.

The infared option gives the river a lava look to it.

Can we see each individual shot in your scraps section or something? I want to see how it was pieced together.

another question - why is the water yellowish? i thought IR filters didn't do that...

Well normally the water would probably be very dark. The tonemapped merged image shows a yellowish sky and water. It became more pronounced from the adjustments I made with curves.
I may submit an alternate version with a different color/tone. Its one of those IR images that are just fun to play with.

so, umm... IRs are used during the day? what happens if you use them at night? anything special?

I've only tried it a few times in really low light. The self portrait IR shot I did is an example of what happens with low light and IR filter. Another example in my gallery is [link]

hm... it's a cool effect but i personally don't like it. are those filters expensive and to they come in different qualities, like, is there a particular brand that's the best? how much do they darken the image? more than an nd?

Thanks for the honesty man. Yeah they are fairly expensive, at least for wide angle lenses. You can get the smaller filters for pretty cheap. For example my 58mm filter was only 25 bucks on ebay, but the 77mm I use on my wide angle lenses was 250 on ebay(most places sell the same filter for close to 500).
Hoya supposedly makes the best, which is what I have but I have not tried any others. IR filters work by blocking all light except the red spectrum, and yes they are very dark much darker than any ND I have seen. Because of this you have to make your compositions "blindy" as you cannot see through the view finder. IR filters come in 2 flavors that I am aware, the R72 type which is what I use and the R90. The R90 blocks more light than the R72, which from I understand makes trees look more orange and less white.

no problem, honest critique is my religion
thanks for all the info, it really helped. it would have taken forever to google this. i'll remember what you said, it'll come in useful one day. i hoped that they're a lot cheaper because i wanted to experiment a bit with them but i think i have other priorities. a flash, for instance
i just bought a polarizer. cokin brand. supposedly it's great. haven't had time to test it yet. i'm off to my 2 week vacation on the adriatic in about a month. that's where it'll show its true value.
cheers

wow... just wow.... i can't stop staring at the tree stump on the right side. god, it looks sooo good like it was made for HDR. you're getting incredibly good at this. the water is also beautiful, it looks like ice. how long was the exposure?
what's that white stuff behind the trees in the upper middle?

Thanks man!
The white stuff is from snow cap mountain peeks. Exposures were 15sec, 4sec, 30sec.

Nice choice to use the HDR. Was this taken at dusk or changed in photoshop?

This was right around 5 in the afternoon. The color comes from the infrared and HDR merge. The water there was so clear it just sucked up light like crazy. Which is why the river is so saturated.
