They're using the "this is an alternate universe" thing as an excuse to do so, but it still makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Aside from Ash wearing a different hat, his and Pikachu's first bonding experience plays out the exact same way except there's no meeting with Gary beforehand (none that's shown anyway) and Ash doesn't meet Misty and take her bike to flee from the Spearow. So both halves of Egoshipping got screwed here, as did Brock and Team Rocket (who are in the film for comic relief only and don't even MEET Ash and Pikachu!)
