Description

The "Supermodule" was a NASA Ames-proposed alternative to the pressurized elements of Space Station Freedom, combining all US modules into a single massive module launched on an in-line Shuttle-derived heavy lift vehicle. It was hoped that this would drastically reduce costs, by eliminating intermodule interfaces, duplicate module development, assembly labor, and reducing number of launches needed. The Supermodule alone had 60% more volume than the baseline Freedom, not counting partner modules
