I'm incredibly proud of this one. Painted in CSP. I've almost finished re-listening to all of Stormlight Archive and will hopefully be able to start "Rhythm of War" the day it comes out!

S P O I L E R S for "The Stormlight Archive" through "Oathbringer":

an explanation nobody asked for

I’ve had a need to draw Adolin for awhile. I have this intense foreboding feeling that he’s going to die in SA 4-5 or be relegated to a role I will be disappointed with. To beat the potential incoming pain I decided to draw him with all my hopes and dreams in mind. XD A bit like Shallan - drawing people as what they could be and what already lies within them.

Bottom line: I desperately want Adolin to be an Edgedancer. Yes I have an argument for why it’s not unreasonable for the bulk of the main cast to all be Radiants.

Inspiration for this is drawn from descriptions of Cultivation, Wyndle, and the flora of Roshar.

Delphiniums symbolize cheerfulness and goodwill, as well as a protective plant. Delphiniums are used to communicate encouragement and joy, as well as remembering loved ones who have passed. (FTD.com)

Adolin is such a joyful person. And Remembrance fits with the second ideal of the Edgedancers and his mother (who was, in a way, forgotten). While relistening to SA this month I’ve noted how Adolin also fits with the third ideal by “Listening to those who have been ignored.”

The Wisteria can represent many things. Among them “Beauty, love, honor, endurance, releasing burdens, victory over hardships.” (flowermeanings.org) The flora and fauna of Roshar is also inspired by undersea life. The stacked nature of the Wisteria from a distance reminded me of the shalebark in Shallan’s sketchbook. The idea of flowers also comes from joy spren which appear in the physical realm as blue petals.

The colors I wanted to convey were blues, greens, and yellows if possible. I don’t know how well I succeeded. I also wanted to show Adolin with his tanned skin and golden hair (I’m afraid I ended up losing most of my shading on his face). Blue for Kholins + Delphiniums have specific meaning associated with the color blue. Green for Cultivation and Mayalaran. Yellow because Adolin is just this glowing human being (who can and would murder you if you threatened his family).

Bring on Rhythm of War.
