Description
This 'child tank' was developed by the Tempian Army for its paratrooper and rapid insertion brigades to provide those otherwise light infantry units with the ability to rapidly strike against enemy armour and fortifications from range. The Netti FSVT (fire support vehicle tracked) is one of the lightest 'armoured' vehicles utilised by the Tempian Army and can be carried by most medium utility helicopters and all military cargo aircraft from which it can be inserted directly into combat zones by parachute alongside the infantry it will support. It has good speed and agility over rough terrain and is light enough to be operate effectively in soft ground such as mud and swamps without becoming bogged as frequently as a standard MBT or IFV would. The Netti's armour is rated against anti-personnel weapons and shell fragments and the vehicle provides NBCR protection for its crew. Typically its armament features an auto-cannon for engaging light vehicles and low flying aerial targets, and ATGMs for engaging armour and fortifications, supported by light machine guns (for infantry) but variants can fulfill a variety of functions from mortar and SAM carriers to battlefield ambulances. The Netti is also amphibious and able to traverse aquatic terrain with minimal preparation. A reconnaissance variant of the Netti with advanced opticals and target identification technology has been used by mainline mechanised and armoured brigades of the Tempian Army.Specifications:
Length: ~ 5.2 m
Height: ~ 2.1 m
Width: ~ 2.1 m
Weight: ~ 6 - 8 t depending on armament
Crew: 2 (driver, gunner/commander)
Armour: Rated for modern anti-personnel weapons. Composition and thickness classified.
Armament:
Main armament: Turret mounted ~ 30 mm Colonialguard II auto-cannon with armour piercing plasma shells, Nightshroud ATGM (plasma shaped charge) mounted externally on turret (12 missiles stored in rear hull compartment)
Secondary armament: 2x ~ .30 cal plasma machine guns (1x co-axial, 1x AA), 2x active projectile countermeasure system (mounted either side of turret)
Suspension: torsion bar
Top speed: ~ 100 km/h off road, ~ 20 km/h amphibious
Engine: 2x ~ 60 cm phase coils
Operational range: Near indefinite excluding mechanical maintenance

Dimensions are rough estimates based on the height of the girl in the turret who, as a Tempian post-human, is a smidge over 2 m tall. The Netti would be somewhat cramped for her and her driver but for regular humans it would be quite roomy (comparatively). The nature of the armour, weapon systems and engines of the Netti are strictly confidential lest Tempia's alien rivals attempt to discover their workings (and because, if professional weapons engineers in the US cannot produce combat worthy railguns and plasma guns (that I know of), I certainly cannot!).
This design was inspired by such vehicles as the M50 Ontos and Wiesel AWC which were both designed to provide air transportable light fire support for marines and paratroopers. Here, the Netti's low weight would allow it to be deployed quickly and easily from orbit to a planet's surface and from battlefield to battlefield once planetside (I figure a lighter weight would mean a smaller re-entry vehicle or at least, less fuel would be needed in a controlled descent).
Camouflage is the same as the earlier Tenari vehicles here: here: and here: because I couldn't be bothered thinking up a new one for space borne Tempia. Of course, given the vast array of environments even the small interstellar Tempian state would cover, they would use many different camouflage variations!

everything fine and dandy until the chute fails to open and your super light tank becomes a super light non explosive bomb

That would be unfortunate but rather unlikely given Space Tempian technology. Should parachuting be ill-advised, it can be inserted by helicopter etc... instead.

Almost reminds me of one of the Colonial Marine tanks from the Alien expanded universe.

looking at it again, it's less similar than I remember. But the camo sorta reminds me of it.

Oh the camo is just the design I use for all Tempian and Tenari vehicles.

It looks really small, pretty useful for airmobile units extra punch

That's the idea. Maximal firepower for minimal volume and mass (so you can stuff more of them into transports for airdropping). Also better handling on soft terrain.

You could have a version without the turret to fill a similar utility role to the BTR-Ds of the Russian airborne, carrying supplies and towing heavy equipment like generators or field kitchens. Or does this military have entirely different vehicles for that?

Yeah they could do that. Although it won't fit many supplies inside of it.

That poor commander is going to be hard pressed to use all its weapons. I'd have the AA mg to be operable by the driver, via remote control. (or just remove it)

They don't use them all at once, rather as required by the infantry they work with.
The auto-cannon and coaxial machine gun are both fired from the same trigger where a fire control toggle can select between the two (like firing the .50 cal and .30 cal in the T50 turret for Australian M113's).
The ATGM is only used against high value targets when there isn't a pressing need to engage with the Netti's other weapons.
The AA machine gun is only used when the commander is out of the hatch and needs to immediately shoot or some other situation demands it (like if the turret weapons cannot elevate enough to hit the target). It isn't necessary for all missions but I included it for completeness.
Ideally, there would be a separate gunner in the crew but the Netti's size and weight restrictions limit this and it was decided that decreased weight and volume for increased lift capacity was preferable (it is specifically designed to support airborne and marine units). Further, the space Tempians have advanced themselves to a form of post humanity which includes improved mental capabilities so they would be much better at juggling these responsibilities than modern day humans from Earth.
