Grunts are basically like NPCs from MOBAs - they exist purely to be brutally murdered (For points in Attrition rather than currency, though). They do occasionally get lucky and kill players, or do damage, but they're mostly there for show and to emphasis the power of pilots.

The only NPC pilots are in the campaign, and they're stuck in Titans at the start of the round - which are usually blown apart quickly as the AI isn't too superb even inside the Titan. 

Captains, NPC Titans, and Spectres / Rocket infantry are the only ones who hold a semblance of genuine threat.
