Description
I've just turned 25 years old and I haven't had my first job yet. Do you know how that makes me feel? Nothing but an utter failure in life.I've been claiming Job Seekers Allowance since August last year. For a whole year I've been applying for jobs and I keep on getting rejected. It's getting to the point where I have lost my passion for living and as a result I'm getting frustrated as well as depressed. I'm beginning to think that I won't ever get a job as long as I shall live and I've very little confidence and hope.
I look around me and all I see is injustice, favouritism, judgmental and prejudiced people, particularly those who are in a position to employ people in their companies. Why is the world reduced to this state? The governments of all nations are hypocrites because they say they are doing their best to lower unemployment when there are people out there who is struggling to try and make a living for themself.
I can't even get past the application process, meaning I have never had the chance to be considered for an interview. I keep on trying my best when it comes to applying for jobs and what do I get in return for my efforts? Cold, hard rejection.
Yes, plenty of people have told me that I'm bound to suffer from knock backs when I'm applying for jobs and that I should try and soldier on because eventually something will turn up. But after hearing that for so many times, I'm starting to get negative, bitter and pessimistic. It's no wonder why I want to give up in life. It's no wonder why my spirit has been broken. It's no wonder why i have no self confidence whatsoever.
What I don't seem to understand is the Job Centre has put me on a Work Programme because I don't get interviews, and the Work Programme is not helping me in any way whatsoever. All they do is send me on training courses and workshops in order to boost my efforts and success in finally landing a job. Well, guess what? I've been on the Work Programme since August and my luck still hasn't changed.
Yesterday I went to a screening test and it was for a toy store. Basically what they done was to see each individual on their own to ask their questions and gauge their responses. In the end they decide whether or not a candidate is suitable enough to be taken through to the interview process.
I had to compete against twenty odd people while there were around twelve positions available. And you know who conducted the screening test? A member of staff from the Work Programme. There was nobody who represented the toy store present at the test, so that is wrong on all accounts.
In the end later on that day I was informed that I was unsuccessful and I wouldn't have an interview. I was outraged because they put so much emphasis on the fact that personality is important. They said be yourself and to have the right attitude and willingness to work. In other words, it is required to sell yourself.
I have all those qualities. I have a good personality as well as good personal qualities. I am willing to get a job in order to gain more skills. Why do you think I've been applying for jobs if I don't want to work?
But all of them are hypocrites. None of the employers want you to be yourself. They want someone to mold into their image of a perfect worker, someone who will match up with their criteria. They don't want anyone who has their own opinions. They reject those who can think for themselves and because of that, they look down on you as if you were a piece of shit hanging from their shoes.
So, they think they're better and superior to you just because they have a job and you don't? Honestly, that makes my blood boil with unrestrained anger and resentment. How can they expect you to respect them and be polite to them when they don't show you any compassion?
I've tried being honest in my application forms and honesty doesn't get you anywhere. And because that I'm literally backed into a corner with no way of escaping, I sometimes lie on my application forms. I know it's not right to lie on anything like that, but I have no other ideas.
I don't want to do voluntary work. I've done three of those already. The most recent one was this year when I was working at a children's centre doing a mixture of child care and admin based work. Although it was unpaid work for two months, I really enjoyed it. But sadly nothing came out of it. I want to have a proper job right now where I earn money. I don't want to rely on anyone else. I want some independence because if you don't have that, then you can't call yourself a true adult.
And here's something I can't understand. Yesterday after my screening test was over, the man said "You gave good answers. I liked them" Well, in hindsight I think he was giving me nothing but fake encouragement. Why say that when clearly it's already been decided that I wasn't suitable enough to go for an interview?
Another thing I realise is that it's very ironic that people go onto further education and after they graduate they are the ones who struggle to get a job. I know this pain all too well. I've obtained 8 GCSEs from Grades A to C. I've got 2 A-Levels in English Literature and Information Technology. I then went onto the University of East London and it took me four years of hard work to finally get a degree in English Literature.
I consider myself as a highly intelligent and creative person who has a good head on my shoulders as well as a good brain. But why is that if I have a fairly excellent education background and I can't find a job?
Sometimes I wonder if all my education was a waste of time because I'm struggling to make my way through life. Everyone has to start from the bottom in terms of their career. Everyone will have shit jobs at first but then things will gradually become better because they are climbing the proverbial ladder. I am willing to try any job out because I know that I can't be picky. Heck, I've been applied for fast food restaurants.
But how can anyone give me the chance to gain some sort of experience when they deem me not good enough? It's a vicious circle and I know that the job economy won't change for the better in the future to come.
It makes me sad when I see people who didn't do well in school get more job opportunities than me. It seems that employers are focused on employing people with bad or average grades. And as I'm starting to notice this more and more every day, I am convinced there is no room for intelligent people. They are the ones who don't belong in the world as it would seem.
But hey, that's just one of life's mysteries that we will never figure out.

It's good to know I am not alone in this matter. But yeah, getting your first job seems pretty hard sometimes Good news is I'm doing a child care course, so that might help my future chances in work.

totally feel your pain. I just recently turned friggin THIRTY, and I've been trying unsucessfully to find permanent employment for 2 years. TWO. YEARS. Talk about demoralizing. I did have a temporary job over the holidays, but that's over now. I hate being on welfare, but I have no choice. Ever since I lost my grocery job because I refused to take their favoritist garbage anymore and said some things I probably shouldn't have, I have not been able to find a permanent job.
The people working with me say my attitude is too negative, and maybe they're right, but it's so much easier to take the countless rejections if I never let my hopes get too high. And I don't interview well because A) I get MAJORLY stressed out B) I'm scared of new people (I was bullied a lot in the past, including by a certain ex-boss) C) I have a disability D) I tend to self-efface (also because of being bullied) and downtalk myself when they tell you to upsell yourself I am absolutely no good at persuasion/selling...and you almost have to in order to get a job. I'm sorry, I don't want to be one of those arrogant, pushy, rude salesman-types. It's just NOT me. And all jobs seem to want only those types of people.
So now I'm a jaded, sarcastic cynic. I have a right to be, dangit. Until they show me a world where I am accepted for who I am and not for how much product I can or can't sell. (Fat chance of that ever happening.) I'm not a robot.

This happens to my old sister. She couldn`t get a job as a store greeter or a job in McDonalds. I think she tried to apply for the Waffle House, but I`m not sure.

Yes, this. I am almost exactly in the same situation. 25, Computing degree, no experience and no job to call my own. Heck, I do believe employees bias candidates for the tiniest errors. Like a simple error on a CV that's crazy.
Fortunately I have had all but two interviews, and that's where it all falls apart as I am an Aspie/autistic. As one employer cited, being too quiet, not looking enthusiastic enough, appearing/sounding drunk at interviews.
Heck, I can't guarantee long term employment as companies are not willing to cater for my needs, despite having a lot to give plus a high IQ to boot!
Eh... I still remain hopeful, as I'm going down the Occupational Therapy with the National Autistic Society. There, hopefully find an employer willing to take an IT professional on.

Aww, sorry to hear you are in the same situation D: And that is very true. You have to have perfect grammar and spelling in your CV and it has to be 2 pages long or they will simply throw it in the bin and move onto the next CV. It is just so unbelievable!
Well, ever since I made this stamp, I had another interview last month (it was my second one) and it was for a care home position. I don't think I got the job though and that kinda shocked my advisor at the Work Programme. She thought I was the perfect person for that sort of work. My problem when it comes to interviews is that I get tongue tied and I don't give enough details in my answers I think.

I know how you feel. Same thing happened to my sis. She didn't like that she was out of college and with no work besides lower paying restaurant jobs so she saved up some cash from her jobs and moved to DC to go to Howard to get her masters. She just so happened to get a great paying tech job a few months into the year. If she could do it so can you. Just take it one step at a time.

That's probably because the older generations can't handle the fact that people our age are better adapted for the present, so they keep us down so they can stay in control

I don't understand why someone is middle aged say that the younger generation has a better chance in successfully getting a job. If that's the case, then why the hell there is far more unemployment of people between the ages of 18 and 24?

They probably think our generation is screwy, irresponsible, and so on, too. After all, why take a chance on someone when there are plenty of "proven" people around to hire? :/

I just think it's stupid that near enough all employers judge you by your personality and sometimes looks. After all, first impressions counts for everything.
By the age of 25 I should have got a job by now or even earlier on. And it's so damn degrading going to the unemployment office/Job Centre to sign on and prove you are looking for jobs as that's when they pay you fortnightly. Do you know how actually degrading that is for a person?

One idea, though (if you're open to solutions) is to take inventory of every skill, interest, etc. you have and then either freelance or start your own business.

Yeah, I can't find a job either, and its always the same bullshit " You need prior work experience.. blah blah blah" and I really want to say " How am I supposed to GET EXPERIENCE if I'm not hired" plus, they train you, but employers are too lazy to train now. Do I need a freaking ph.D to work in a grocery store now? I hate it when the hire rude, ignorant people, too. UGH.

That is the exact thing I want to say to them as well. I think because they want someone with more experience because thy have to pay to train those with no experience. It's not ideal for those who want to get a job and gain experience at the same time.

Yeah I know.. with the economy down, it's hard to train people..
It's still really annoying though, if someone is eager to work .. but doesn't have the experience.. they won't get hired.
I remember in the 90s where most of the teenagers I knew had jobs at restaurants or at retail stores. Nowadays, it's adults..

It's annoying.. employers can be rude too. I did however, got my first job at my local movie theatre, but I was there seasonally (they told me I can reapply whenever I wanted though) afterwards, I was trying to find a job and employers were rude to me whenever I asked for a job, I was lucky enough to get hired at Michael's Arts and Crafts store, because they were hiring.
Well, on an application, put down any volunteer related work you've done, and call them after you have applied and be persistent!
I just hate the asinine cycle that you NEED experience to get a job. Seriously, why can't most employers get that through their head!

VioletWhirlwind In reply to DivineNightShade [2013-02-18 03:44:11 +0000 UTC]
I do have some experience in various things...but it's never enough for the employers...everything is already listed on my resume (including volunteering positions), And most people I've talked to are impressed by my resume, but it's still never enough. Employers just don't want to spend the time/money to train, I guess.

Heh...I want to use my degree...but there's nothing open in my field (graphic design.)...and even if there was, it all seems way too heavy in the 'advertising' category (I wanted to learn how to make computer art...not advertising)...and I've discovered that I don't really like advertising that much...way too pushy and 'sell-a-product'-y.
And there's also nothing available in my other area of interest (working with animals)
So now I'm looking at my third choice...something clerical. Only problem with that is...I get overly stressed with too much people-contact, and tend to do things at a more measured pace (so I'm slower at things like typing (but make very few errors...not that employers care about that when you're not fast enough >.> ))
Augh. Makes me wonder if I can ever do anything well enough for a job *headdesk*
