Description
     Despite Cory's misgivings, things started off well, and with her help Winnie got up on the granite counter around the sink and began replacing the pendant light bulbs. She finished the first two with no trouble, and when she was still screwing in the final bulb she told Cory to turn them on and see if they all worked now. Unfortunately, these were halogen bulbs and got very hot very fast, and Winnie still had her fingers on the bulb when it heated up and began to burn them. The sudden pain in her fingertips scared her, and she stepped back away from the fixture, completely forgetting that she was on the counter.
     Cory heard her scream almost as soon as she had turned on the lights, and when she spun around she ran to try to catch Winnie.
     Too late, since her right leg was already well off the counter and she was falling backwards. At least by being behind her she was able to keep Winnie mostly vertical and prevent her head from hitting the hard, tiled floor, but a spike heel is no match for gravity, and when her right leg came down it was stiff and completely unprepared to flex in order to cushion the impact. The heel collapsed on contact, breaking off and turning her foot to the outside. The rest of her weight came down on top of it, breaking her ankle and tibia with loud snaps that both girls heard.
     It was all over in seconds, and Cory found herself on the floor with Winnie in her arms, screaming about how much it hurt!
     Cory let her go for just long enough to grab her cell phone and call 911.
     EMT's arrived quickly - there was a station very close to serve the beach area - and already found her ankle and lower leg swelling inside the boot. There was no alternative but to cut her boot off before splinting the leg, and Cory managed to tick off Winnie when she giggled at the fact she was more concerned about her boot than her obviously broken ankle and leg!
     The ambulance was on the way to the hospital in minutes, and Cory followed behind after making sure the power was off and the house was locked up.
