well they've released the ds and a bazillion variations, that technically counts as many
and the 3ds is an entirely new system, ds games can't play on a 3ds and vis versa

sure, ds games can be played on ds lite/dsi/dsixl, but not on the 3ds. it's a new system with a new graphics/sound/gameplay engine. ds games can't play on the 3ds, nor the other way around

It can't because they want you to buy a 3DS and a DS. It would be very simple to make the 3DS play everything. It's less of a new system and more of a broken DS. The system is essentially the same but with 3D capabilities. Adding 3D doesn't make it a new system.

its graphics engine is entirely new. the quality is higher than it was originally. but i can see where you're coming from
i wasn't necessarily focusing on the 3d though, more on the joystick akin to the psp. it needs even more programming in order to support joystick control

so if the screen is divided like in super mario kart it doesn't look incredibly weird
that and a flip-open system designed not to get the screen dirty (unlike my mucky psp) would have a lot of empty space

I still find the point of the system flawed. And I actually liked the way the screen divides in Super Mario Kart.
{My older sister has a PSP, she hasn't had any troubles with getting dirty and when I've borrowed it I haven't either}

the psp's screen is ridiculously large, it's kind of hard not to pick it up and smudge the screen
also many games find use for the touch screen, i guess you have a point. but i honestly always thought super mario kart's screen division looked pretty strange. it's a matter of opinion really
