Twi was already incredibly powerful before she became a princess, she probably won't notice any difference if there is any.

She had problems adjusting to her alicorn magic and she's probably used to the ease that she can use as an alicon. She would notice having to do slight more work to do a spell.

My point is that becoming an Alicorn seems almost solely to be a status increase rather than an actual power up

Maybe but not in any real visible way, even when she wasn't an alicorn Twilight could already travel through space, time and turn her horn into a machine gun. All being an alicron seems to do is make her able to walk on clouds without making using a spell.
