Wow. Finally, after an extended digital hiatus I've decided to make a new Lightsaber. Admittedly, this one was somewhat a pain in the butt to bringing into fruition. But after a grueling fight against Artist's Block, I managed to come up with a design I feel happy with.I decided to change the style a bit and deviate from my previous work. Instead of using procedural maps, I decided to go with texture mapping. I feel like I have more control that way. I'm also using Illustrate 5.4 for the cell-shaded look + ambient occlusion pass.
Tools used:
3ds Max 9 with Illustrate 5.4 plugin.
Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Nice concept that looks plain at first sight, but reveals much small details upon closer inspection. It looks like it would sit comfortable in the hand with the grip bump to grasp around.
When you envisioned this one what kind of material were you thinking of for the different layers / components?

Well, over all I like the look of it. From the coloring to the texture and build...it has a very 'natural' look to it. (like myyrdneopia said, it has an insect-like look to it)...about the only fault I find with it is the curved bottom/pommel section. It just seems like too much and makes it look a bit awkward to me. Still, over all I really like it. Good job ^_^

Brood, love this design! Something that bothers me about most lightsabers is that with their basic tube design pommel, is that there is not sufficient 'texture' for a good grip with some combat strikes. Your design here looks almost ergonomic, offering several points for the hand to curl around and have a secure hold.
The only 'issue' I have with this design is it looks too long for a single grip but too short for a good double grip that most lightsaber styles use. (Or maybe its just me, I've been told I don't have hands, I have paws!)

bro - you make sick designs!! I've seen people ask you if you'd take a commission to design a saber for them so that they can make it a reality - did you ever agree? Have you ever thought of getting your designs made forreal by a sabersmith?? Would love to learn more....

I always say no to those types of requests because I'm a HUGE procrastinator. I'd hate to commit to something that I know I won't be able to deliver.
Besides, this is just a hobby of mine, and I only work on my designs whenever I have enough time and I get hit with inspiration. Which is why you'll notice such a huge gap in time between deviations.

too cool. This reminds that I have lightsaber concepts of my own that I should be working on for artistic sake. It looks so functional compared to the movie (and other media) versions.

actually, i think it could go either way. It looks to me as if an insect-like humanoid built it - it has that exoskeletal feel that isn't seen in many lightsabers
