Unfamiliar with Kale Jumper when he showed up one day at his gym, Gary was equally unaware of Kale's long experience before he stepped away from the boxing scene. Kale's style and techniques were a little rusty as he was just starting his comeback. Nevertheless Gary was impressed with what he saw, and when Kale requested a match, Gary saw an opportunity to bring this impressive fighter to the gym.

Things did not work out exactly to plan.

Gary and Kale fought a hard battle, each making the other pay for any gains they managed to get. Jabs were traded for straights, hooks for uppercuts. By the end of the fight, it was close, but Kale had the reserve energy to put Gary away.

Gary had intended to win Kale over with a display of his prowess. But in the end it was Gary's comradery and good nature in the face of being beaten that convinced the kangaroo to stay and become close friends.
