Yeah, this is pretty ridiculous. but hear me out on this one.

The upcoming Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, outright STATES that each series in the whole Mario franchise is actually an alternate universe. How else would the Paper Mario universe, contained in a book, somehow leak into the Mario and Luigi world, when (as far as we thought) they supposedly existed in the same timeline. No, they are co-existing universes, an adventure in the Paper Mario world, being a good book for a citizen of the Mario and Luigi world, until silly Luigi knocks the thing over and sets loose the denizens of the book into the Mario and Luigi world.

Now, following this logic, the main series, the "Super Mario" world *Insert Yoshi here* should be the same as the "Paper Mario" and "Mario and Luigi" worlds. It's own universe that may co-exist with the others somehow. But how does this tie in with Luigi being able to hop between them?

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team has some huuuge supporting evidence in this theory, mainly with the area known as Dream's Deep. If you didn't already know, it's the deepest part of Luigi's dreams, where his thoughts and emotions swirl and run rampant. You can actually see some of Luigi's thoughts circling you during the first part of your trip down there! These thoughts are the core evidence that supports this theory. These important thoughts say:
"I can jump high!"
"I fight ghosts!"
"Big Bro, take me with you"
These are very important in proving this theory. Why? Well, I'll explain each thought and how it relates to Luigi and hopping between dimensions. "I can jump high". Remember, this is a Mario and Luigi universe thought, and throughout these games, Mario and Luigi jump at around the same height. "I can jump high" means a feat of Luigi's he has over Mario, but they're jumping at the same height. But, in the Super Mario universe, Luigi's jump height is much more than that of Mario's. He takes pride in his high height, and it's a feat he has over Mario. The thought of "I fight ghosts" is something we don't really see happen in the Mario and Luigi universe, though it did happen in Superstar Saga, it happened after Luigi's Mansion. But, Superstar Saga was the first in the Mario and Luigi series. Perhaps, E. Gadd created the dimensional hopper for Luigi's use, and Superstar Saga may take place while the two were exploring the new dimension, and the ghost at the café had followed them through. Though, "I can fight ghosts" is more than one ghost, and Luigi knew how to fully operate the Poltergust, even if no ghost-catching escapade happened in the Mario and Luigi universe. The third thought, "Big Bro, Take me with you", is the least important, but it still holds some water in this theory. After Luigi's Mansion, E. Gadd noticed how much Luigi wanted to go on adventures with his brother, but couldn't, as Mario was always too busy. So, E. Gadd started dimensional research on the side of his ghost and paranormal research, and created a device for Luigi to use when he felt left out. He could just hop over to another dimension and have an adventure with the Mario there, just in time to be included on the next quest of that dimension!
