So... I've colored a few pages, some time ago as a trial for a studio, that I haven't posted here on DA yet (lazy bum), and things didn't work that well cuz I took so much time choosing which colors to use. I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to use the tools n colors but never one on how to approach a white page. Although I posted this under this under tutorials, i see it more as some thoughts that I decided to lay down for ppl with the same difficulties as me, on coming up with color schemes, and to hear other ppls thoughts on this, what works for them, etc.

So first step, in grayscale, filled bg layer with a gray and used white airbrush to place the focal points. Then, figure out volume putting down shadows areas and highlights, jumping back and forth...or forth and backno rules in this tut!!!

Now, convert to RGB or CMYK. Note u can also scale the page down since this is only to figure out your color palette and volume.

In this case, I added a layer on color mode on top of the BG layer and dropped some color.That didn't work very well, so I created a layer above, on normal mode,and dropped colors more in way I was visualizing, but very softly cuz I didn't want to loose the volume info. Another way or other things that I could have done were to make the BG Layer into multiply and put it on top of a layer to be colored. Could have manipulated the levels on the BG Layer with an adjustment layer (wich I didn't;forgot...) Lots of possibilities,just a matter of knowing photoshop and picking one.

I also created a Layer on top of the lineart, put some color with an airbrush with op and flow set to 100, press on flow, and played with the hue/sat command and the layer's opacity.

It got to a point that I had to many layers for my taste under the line art layer, so I hid it (the lineart layer) hit ctrl+A, ctrl+shift+C, ctrl+V. What I did, for those who don't know, was created one layer with all the color info on the layers showing. So now, without disposing those other layer I can fiddle with brushes with different blending modes, adjustment layers, commands or,which what was I did, hit ctrl+J to copy that new layer and mess with the blending modes. Cuz I see blending modes as levels presets so, instead of pushing sliders back and forth, just tried different blending modes to give an idea of what I wanted and that could work for the page. But I felt I struck gold when switched the layer to multiply. I could still have messed aroud with a lot of different tools but I felt this was it, aside a few retouches like the Things teeth, some highlights on his head, an almost white yellow on the Torch's head and arms to create a frame with him and the Thing to hold that tension (I think that was the intention of the artist Steve McNiven's from the begining, now that I look at it), etc.

So now that I have that color palette, I can just do b&w on the other pages to get a feel of the volume and go. Of course I'm refering to the pages of that sequence; I'd do other color sketches for other sequences(duh...)!

I did this last night and it took me almost two hours. I haven't had time to color pages, lately, but I think If I had approached pages back then I wouldn't have wasted so much time.

What do you think? From your experience, what is the method that works best for u? Feel free to put link to tutorials on coloring pages, not how to color(I just hope I haven't seen them, yet; I'm kinda addicted to those so that'll b hard).
