Description
LCROSS

NASA's LCROSS mission was a robotic spacecraft that was designed to search for and detect water under the surface of the Moon. A small launch vehicle was smashed into a crater on the Moon's polar region, sending a plume of dust and ice into the air, which was then analyzed by the spacecraft.

This is my rendition of what it might have looked like to be there. There are a few artistic liberties taken, such as the vibrancy of the Milky Way, the sizing of the Sun, Earth and Mars, the lighting (since the polar region's craters are constantly shadowed, it wouldn't be as light as depicted), and the dust plume has already mostly cleared to allow the celestial sphere to be seen.

You can see the Sun, the Earth, Mars (it's small, but it's there ), part of the spiral arms of the Milky Way, the large and small Magellanic clouds, and a ton of stars. One of the small, reddish stars and yellowish stars might be Jupiter and Saturn if you choose.

Tools Used

  • Photoshop CS5

  • Apophysis, Apophysis 3D Hack

  • e-on Vue 8 xStream

  • 3D Studio Max

The Moon's surface is a procedural terrain based on a terrain fractal from e-on Vue with a crater-based fractal layered on top. The Milky Way is around 100 different Apophysis fractals blended together. To get the shape, I started with a NASA image of the Milky Way, then I began to layer the fractals on top until I had the overall shape, then I removed the NASA image and began to develop the structure. I then added some gas and dust around, and then used a few tricks to get the depth. The Earth was rendered in 3D, using a planetary map and a clouds map blended with a photo of the Earth to get the proper depth.

This is what it SHOULD have looked like being there. If not, then I think "God" desperately needs a few Design tips from you

Very nice nebula, it looks awesome !

Can you tell me which "variation" do you use in Apophysis 3DHack to have those renders ? Thanks

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Brukhar In reply to MA7R [2010-07-21 17:12:29 +0000 UTC]

hey, i used apophysis and apo3D. for apophysis regular i used spherical variation and just rendered out a bunch with blue, red and purple tones. and in apo3D i used the bubbles script and either mutated it or used spherical again. most of the apo renders look terrible by themselves i've found, but when you add them together you can start to build structure

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Brukhar In reply to arisechicken117 [2010-07-21 17:10:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i was kinda bouncing back and forth for the # of stars and the colors. technically, more stars are realistic, like if you've ever seen an astrophoto of the night sky with the milky way, there's a zillion stars but i know what u mean

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

arisechicken117 In reply to Brukhar [2010-07-21 17:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, i know exactly what you mean. The galactic core or band contains billions of stars. I just didnt know if that was a nebula or galactic band. It wouldnt be so unusual with that amount of stars if they were spread out randomly instead of the same amount per square inch. Know what i mean? Like clustered instead of even pattern.

Brukhar In reply to arisechicken117 [2010-07-21 17:55:45 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Brukhar In reply to NekoKnuxaechidna [2010-07-13 04:48:36 +0000 UTC]

well actually, given lighting conditions that would allow you to see the structure of the Milky Way like that, you'd be able to see even more stars than I have see for example: [link]

and that's with the haze of earth's atmosphere even

Beautiful! I love your "vibrant" Milky Way, and the spacecraft with its dust plume adds a lot of interest to the picture. I guess because it's a touch of humanity on a barren world.

I've always enjoyed your work, and I still do!

I have to say- WOW...

its amazing in the first look.. but when you come deeper.. the "sun" you could do a lot!! better.. or just cut her.. its just a lens!
the stars in the background they're just wrong.. going randomly red white blue.. make it real.. i know you can better...
thats it.. make it better and it will be perfect!!!!!!!
