Description The city of Samara in the USSR has survived many of the catastrophes the befell other metropolises during the proverbial 'Age of Monsters', having went through most of the era almost completely untouched by monster attacks or alien invasions. It has prospered along with the rest of the Combloc nations in the 1970s, which saw the domestic, political and economic liberalization of the communist states*, beginning with the USSR under the reformist government, based in Leningrad, which came to power following Premier Brezhnev and most of the Soviet politburo's demise in Rodan's destruction of Moscow during the Kilaakian War of 1968. As it enters the 21st Century along with the rest of the Soviet Union, it seemed to its people that the city would remain a sanctuary of peace, prosperity and progress in a world that has gone mad since 1954.

However, perhaps inevitably, its luck eventually ran out.

SpaceGodzilla, one of the many extraterrestrial and monster scourges of Earth ever since its first appearance in 1995, was detected travelling towards Earth during the fall of 20XX, on a trajectory that would see it make planet-fall somewhere among the Combloc nations within 2 hours of its detection. It was not until after it has battled its way through Earth's defenses - plowing its way through UNSDF's** first fleet and tanking several 50 megaton casaba howitzer shots from the orbital defense network - before the UNGDF was able to triangulate its exact landing point.

Despite a Herculean effort by the USSR government to evacuate its cities before the kaiju's assault, half of Samara was still not vacated when Space Godzilla landed in the heart of the city. The next 24 hours would see a running battle between elements of the local UNGDF contingent, supported by the Soviet Armed Forces, and the space kaiju as it devastated the city and its surroundings, with the human forces fighting desperately to keep it from the civilian population.

The Battle of Samara culminated with the arrival of an ad-hoc UNGDF heavy rapid-response force - a MK II M.O.G.U.E.R.A. squadron of three mechs, supported by a Gotengo-class aerial weapons platform. After a further 45 minute battle, the kaiju mysteriously conceded defeat and retreated back into space. This was perhaps because it sensed the approaching presence of the so-called 'Earth-Guardian' kaijus, Mothra and Battra, reportedly called upon by the local Mothrans***, both of which arrived just as SpaceGodzilla departs.

Although the human forces had arguably prevailed, the aftermath made it a Pyrrhic victory; although casualties were less than feared, hundreds of thousands were killed or wounded, the UNGDF and Soviet military sustained heavy casualties, while Samara was leveled and irradiated beyond recovery, and was later classified as an Exclusion Zone on the same level as Chenobyl, Moscow, Tokyo, New York...

The reasons why SpaceGodzilla choose to attack the city remained a mystery, although later actions of the space kaiju along with recently declassified documents from the UNGDF database and the Soviet archives provides hints to the usually inscrutible, incomprehensible motives of the enigmatic alien clone of Godzilla..."

--- Internode Entry on the '20XX Samara Incident'

* Western historians would call this period the 'Red Spring', a contributing factor to the continuation of the Detente and the early end of the Cold War by the late 70s - early 80s.

** United Nations Space Defense Force, a major branch of the United Nations Global Defense Force, charged with defense of Earth and its colonies in the Solar System

*** Mothrans refer to members of the Mothra Dharma, one of the many kaiju-worshipping religious/ideological movements that emerged during the 1960s-1970s, and arguably the most successful religions in recent times, with over 250 million members by the year 2000.

= = =

So yeah, another SFM creation. This time with an extensive story to go with it. Go figure.

Used a large number of models for this one. Soviet soldiers, the Maser tank, SpaceGodzilla and the weapons are custom models, while the helicopters are actually Combine helicopters from Half Life 2.

Also, I wonder if any sort of ultranationalist/neo-Socialist movements would eventually arise in the Soviet Union due to a increasing belief of the politburo having become “Imperialist puppets” for the UN and EDF...

That would make things incredibly interesting (and problematic, at least for the UNGDF).

Of course, in my potential future kaiju-verse series, horrific experience during the 20th Century by all those kaiju and alien attacks had taught the ones defending the world that sometimes, it becomes necessary to take... extraordinary steps to ensure they won't get effed over by people like them.

The future of humanity and all living things on Earth is at stake; how far are people willing to go to save it? That is a question I would like to explore...

The conflict between freedom and security...definitely one of the most prevailing ones throughout history. Although, if civil war does break out in Russia, I have no doubt that the UN would supply the USSR (who are probably surviving in this timeline purely on their support) with the most advanced technology and weapons (not to mention troops) they have to offer. And even of the rebels manage to get their hands on EDF-produced weapons and tech, they probably wouldn’t last long.

Something to consider. Though there's issue of Russia's nukes...

True...if they did manage to capture even one of the nuclear launch sites, they could inflict heavy damage onto the EDF/Soviet forces (as well as disable a lot of their machinery in the ensuing EMP), not to mention the possibility of attracting any nearby Kaiju to the resulting radioactive fallout...

I can see them becoming key strategic points in the war.

I can't help but imagine that the Mothra Dharma would heavily persecuted in the Middle East...

True, though I imagine that with the whole religious movement possessing many psychics like Miki Saegusa as members. Which means actually harming them would be difficult, considering how easy it is to telepathically detect hostile intent, utilize clairvoyance to see potential attacks coming, use mental compulsion to force attackers to peacefully disarm as self-defense, or throw them a distance with telekinesis...

True. They would be a hard nut to crack for the Islamist governments down there...

Love this! Very few do this, and have a story to go with it. Plus, there is so much more that can be added.

What would you suggest?

One idea is seeing how much it diverges after the Prime Event (Godzilla's attack on Tokyo in 1954). More than one Godzilla, or the same one (then coming up with how and why if so)? Great start, could grow to POV verse size, maybe, if if enough ideas come up.

Possible. Depends if I got time and incentive in the future to develop it...

Oooh, massive world building. Kilaakian War from the Showa era, plus the rest screams (to me), a combination of at least the Showa and Heisi era's. Really hoping for more based here.

There's so much that can be made going off this: where's Godzilla? When did the other Exclusion Zones happen (Moscow is from 1968, I wouldn't be surprised, and Tokyo could be from Godzilla's first attack in 1954, or any other time. New York, I'm not sure), and what other kaiju are out there.

Heck, if you really want to get crazy, this could be another round robin series. Filling in the blanks.

Interesting proposal... Though I wonder if enough of us are interested in Godzilla enough to make it work.

Okay, ignore part of my last replie, but i'll still do a timeline for any more like this.

Good point. If nothing else, if there's more (and there is so much here, and 1000 times more to work with than another series, cough "Pony POV" cough, to work with that is more than fan wishful thinking), I might give it a timeline.
