Description
I've had this super-powered team in mind for a while but never done anything about them, so I finally got around to making up the micro line-up. The basic premise is that thirty years ago, people started developing superhuman abilities. These people became known as Metas. Just how and why this occurred is a mystery, something many governments, corporations and private organisations have tried to understand, whilst also utilising the Metas for their unique abilities.
The Carlton Centre for Meta Research (often known just as the Centre) is one of the leading facilities, but until recently has avoided having any kind of "superhero squad". This new group of young Metas was pulled together to highlight the work the Centre does to help Metas control and hone their abilities. But in a world where governments and other nefarious groups use Metas for their own gain, is there more to what the Centre has in mind?
Concussion – Tyrone "Ty" Beckett, 25
He draws in energy from the environment directly through his skin (hence the amount of flesh exposed on his costume) and expel it in concussive blasts. Tyrone came from an abusive family, where his father was a drunk and a petty thug, so when Ty's Meta abilities started to emerge at fourteen, his mother finally left her husband for the benefit of her son. They were on the run for three years until his mother died from cancer and he enlisted into the Marines, despite Metas being prohibited for regular military service. During an ambush he was forced to expose his abilities after which, despite saving the lives of his team, he was discharged, at which point he was approached by the Centre to further channel his abilities and help teach others to do what he did alone.
Psyche – Evelyn "Eve" Rayner, 24
She possesses a number of psionic abilities, including: astral projection, empathy, mediumship, and telepathy. Her abilities first started to emerge when she was ten (beginning with astral projection and empathy), at which point her parents put her into a government scheme for Metas. When she was fourteen she was put on an internship to one of the active field teams, under the codename 'Psi-Girl', where her role was more as support rather than on the frontlines, but she entered the public consciousness and was seen as a positive role model. However, following a disastrous mission, where she was one of only two survivors (out of a team of nine), she went inactive and sought out a private life. That was until the Centre managed to track her down and asked her to join them as an instructor for other psionics.
Whiplash – Trace Murphy, 20
He has grown long whip-like tentacles that shoot out from his forearms, as well as superhuman agility and above average strength. Unusually, his skin has turned purple and hardened and his hair fell out and was replaced with other tentacles (though these are far less useful). An aspiring teenage actor, his career was stalled when he started to develop a purple rash across his body. After being seen by various doctors his Meta status was realised, which ultimately brought his career to an end. He became a recluse, hiding away from everyone—especially after the paparazzi got involved. When the Centre came to him, offering a safe haven and a promise to try and find a way to reverse the physical alteration, he accepted.
Zero-G – Amelia Starr, 19
She can nullify gravity fields, allowing her to fly and lift incredibly heavy objects. Her twin brother, Victor (codenamed G-Force) possesses the ability to intensify gravity, giving him superior strength and making him almost immovable. Due to their shared abilities, they are very close; however her selection for the Centre’s premier team had driven a wedge between them. From a wealthy family, their father sent them to the Centre, along with a substantial donation, to be cured so that his children were no longer “freaks”. This is another aspect she and Victor differ on, as she can sympathise with their father but he sees it as nothing more than him being ashamed of them and trying to save face for his public persona.
Ghost – Erik Johansson, 19
He has the ability to turn himself invisible as well as phase through solid matter. Something of a prankster, when his abilities first began to manifest he used them how any teenaged boy would, which saw him having a few issues with the school. However, when he was tricked into using his abilities in a crime he was facing some serious trouble, which was when the Centre stepped in and in place of any jail time saw that he was sent to them for training and monitoring.
Tank – Reiko Tanaka, 18
She has superhuman strength, stamina and is almost impervious to injury. One of the ‘popular girls’ at school, the most she ever had to worry about was going with what boy to the prom. But when she was involved in a car accident, from which she emerged with only superficial injuries she faced the stigma of being a Meta. When her old life fell away from her, she contacted the Centre and asked about their programme. Since then she has lost most of her superficial personality, though there are moments when her old self emerges.
Shadow – Erin O’Connell, 17
She can create areas of darkness as well as teleport herself and others through shadows. Something of a wallflower, she was very smart but also very introverted. She first used her abilities when trying to stop some of the jocks from beating up a homeless man, enshrouding herself in shadows to hide the man and herself from them. When the story of what she’d done got out, the Centre approached her, as much for her compassion and willingness to stand up for others than her abilities.
Hellfire – Marco Diaz, 17
He is a pyrokinetic, able to create fire from the air and then control it (he also wants to learn how to use it to fly). With a fiery temper he was in trouble with the law, a lot. But when surrounded by people saying he’d never amount to much, it’s no surprise he started lashing out. His abilities emerged when he burned down a building at his school, unable to control his anger during a fight. Two of the bullies were burned and he was locked up. He scorched several cells before the Centre bailed him out and offered him the kind of life he’d never imagined.
