Description
This was a tricky one to pull off, in terms of the values of light and dark, because there are so many different levels of stuff going on. You've got the falling leaves as the closest foreground elements, then the vampire in the middle-ground, who has to be heavily-draped in shadows. Then for the background you've got the trees immediately behind him, then the rest of the forest receeding even further into the distance. Tricky stuff!Related content

Sorry no, it is not that simple... I can't just give permission for my images to be used in new books, as several of them have already appeared in books by previous publishers. There would be copyright issues. My past publishers would not be happy to know that images they paid for right to print are appearing in other books.

Well, you definitely pulled it off. I love seeing the vampire depicted as a monster. It's pretty rare. I'm using this in my journal about my favorite vampire art~

Thanks for your comments, but.. Seeing a vampire depicted as a monster is pretty rare??? Jeez, what has the world come to.
The whole time I was growing up vampires practically DEFINED what a monster was. Pure evil, back from the grave, feeding on humans, sleeping in coffins...
"Nosferatu"... Bram Stoker's novel... The Christopher Lee Dracula movies... "Salem's Lot", "Fright Night", hell even "The Lost Boys"... THESE were the REAL Vampire stories.
But damn that Ann Rice... she pussified vampires in the 1990's and her curse is still long-lasting. I will never forgive that woman.
Sorry, I am not taking this out on you personally. I appreciate your compliments, I really, truly do. But the post modern Fabio-lookin romantic hero style Vampire is just a major pet peeve of mine, that's all!

Well, I did mean in the last few years, it's rarer to see the vampire as a complete monster. I don't even consider the rodent-like appearance of the Nosferatu films as a monster. I disagree with your thoughts on Anne Rice...I love the romantic aspects of the "tragic" vampire and the characters she made for that. I enjoy reading her stories, I have to say.
But yes, Dracula and 'Salem's Lot remain some of my favorite vampire stories of all time and the various movies made of them as well. I like Lost Boys...but it was a little too 80s for me. It's still enjoyable but I don't take it as seriously. Sutherland's mullet...I just couldn't help but laugh.

See there is the difference. It must be a generational-thing or an age-thing. Movies like Fright Night and Lost Boys came out when I was like, 14, and 15 years old. Keifer Sutherland was virtually unknown back then. So I was seeing him only as that character, and besides, just the basic concept of punk rock vampires was a brand new thing and seemed like baaaad ass shit to us kids back then. It was seeing movies like Fright Night (moreso than Lost Boys) and reading Dracula and Salem's Lot that solidified what vampires were all about, for me when I was young.
By the time the Ann Rice movies started coming out I was 19 or 20 years old. By that time my idea of vampires was already formulated by the sources cited above, and written in stone in my brain. So, Ann Rice's romantic, crybaby vampires seemed like an ass-backwards reversal of everything that made vampires cool to me. So perhaps that is why I cannot see eye to eye with younger people when it comes to vampires. I am too totally 80's.

Hahahaha. I still think the concept of punk rock vampires is all on its own with Lost Boys. I started my vampire thing with Nosferatu (I saw the silent when I was really really young and was terrified) and I guess when I got older I just started looking for other vampire fiction and I thought Anne Rice's more human vampires were more appealing than the rat-like Nosferatu story.
I donno, I appreciate all of them for what they are.

Interesting. Well you are more open-minded than I am. But I can at least respect the opinion of an Ann Rice fan who has actually seen Nosferatu. I also wonder if this vampire style preference is a gender thing. A lot of women prefer the romantic Ann Rice style vampire whereas most guys - (read: most straight males) prefer the more old-fashioned, bloodthirsty, horror oriented vampire. Just another theory. You can't help coming up with this stuff when the only thing you think about is monsters all day long. Haha.
For more awkward vampire drama see the crazy comments that came up over THIS illustration: [link]

I'm just open to all interpretations and I love seeing how the myth of the vampire changes. A lot of people hate it, but one of my favorites is Joss Whedon's interpretation in the Buffy series. I love that their faces morph and that they are completely without soul and conscience. I thought he did a good job mixing both the romantic aspect and the monster aspect into one.
