Description THE DESCENT

“The Descent” is one of the best - and one of the most truly scary - horror films of the past 10 years. It’s really just a very bloody remake of “The Mole People” from 1956, but with a simpler storyline, and more ferocious, visceral scares.

This is a rare example of a good old-fashioned monster movie where the scariest thing in the movie is not the monsters but rather - the environment. “The Descent” isn’t the first movie I’ve seen about people trapped in an underground cave… but no movie has done a better job of freaking me out with that scenario.

The cave is located in a secluded forest with no civilization around for miles. The characters must drive to the middle of nowhere, just to find it. Shortly after they begin exploring, the cave entrance collapses… leaving the group with no choice but to plunge forward through uncharted chambers and unmapped corridors - and just hope there will be another way out, somewhere ahead.

They arrive at a deep, dark place where the only way to continue is to crawl on their bellies through a long, narrow, horizontal tunnel. It’s a tight, cramped little space but they think they can do it. And besides, what other choice do they have? The path behind them is blocked. So out of sheer desperation, they squeeze into this tunnel and start crawling. The tunnel is a tight fit. The ceiling and floor are close enough to bump their helmets and chins. The walls hug their shoulders. The first two girls make it through fine, and keep reminding the nervous third girl to just stay calm, control her breathing, and keep crawling. But just about the time she reaches the halfway point… she gets stuck. She can’t squeeze forward and she can’t squeeze backwards. She starts to panic. We are treated to a few agonizing shots of the panicking girl’s face deep in this tunnel, looking out at her friends, crying and hyperventilating and begging for help.

I’ve never really considered myself claustrophobic, but that scene had me cringing with psychological discomfort! Talk about a movie scene that really touched a nerve!

Later on the monsters show up. They are wonderful, ugly, filthy, nasty monsters. They bring a lot of carnage and violence and mayhem. But there is nothing scarier in the whole movie than that damn tunnel.

I should also mention that “The Descent” has a great visual style. The filmmakers came up with many clever, practical excuses to enhance the mood of various scenes, with savage red light or eerie green glow - via burning torches, helmet-lamps, video cam-corder viewfinders, and hand-held fluorescent tubes. For this illustration, I wanted to draw those terrible subterranean monsters and try to emulate those crazy colored lighting effects. But I didn’t have the nerve to try and depict that tunnel scene. Ha!

This scared the **** out of me watching it at a mates place. We watched the sequel straight after the original movie. It was so creepy. So gutted Juno turned into such a b*tch though. She was so cute. I wanted to see what the creatures did with her.

the Mole People from 1956 is an interesting movie. the monster design is certainly memorable and weird.
I believe the creatures in the Descent were based off Ghouls, cause they're similar to some descriptions of the monsters.

Omg that movie had me literal on the edge of my seat...I really wanted the character "Juno" to get away, but she got eaten...could of shown us that happening! Lol. I'd watch it again...it's sexy and scarey at the same time! This a cool picture too.

I find the film more interesting in that the so-called "decent" is not into some cave with creepy goblin people, but into a state of madness. If you followed the character development of the main lady in the film, then you'd cringe, as well as appreciate it for it's realistic creep factor.

I never gush about horror movies, but The Descent is certainly that rare beast that I do love. I don't know if the combination of red and green lighting really works for this piece, probably would have been better to stick with just one or the other, but I do like how you captured the creatures.

Thanks but you know the movie was constantly using really powerful red and green lights... I wanted to depict both in one piece. And thankfully red and green are opposites of each other on the classic color wheel (yes I took a few "Color Theory" classes in art college), so they compliment each other, which allows an artist to get away with using both at the same time. And a lot (not all but a lot) of my illustrations (like this one) are more like tributes to the overall idea of the movie, as opposed to one specific scene. Anyway thanks for your comments!

I totally get what you were trying to do, and I like the idea, I'm just not sure if it worked. But I get it, honestly!

I just watched this movie with my brother! I can truly say that it was a terrifying movie because of its claustrophobic environment and suspenseful pace. I actually found myself holding my breath during some scenes! Not to mention, we were watching the movie at night in our basement with all of our lights turned off!

I call those things "The Blind Death". Death maybe blind but it doesn't mean that can't find you. The Blind Death will find you if you make a sound.

Yes... See the 1970's movie "Tombs of the Blind Dead" for an even more literal example of what you are talking about.

It's a fun, visually awesome 1970's European horror film... Awesome cobweb-covered skeleton zombies in dusty hooded robes, riding on horseback and attacking with swords. Great stuff. [link]

The best thing about this film is how well-paced it is. I mean, they lead you into the tunnel nice and slow, then the claustrophobia scene comes in and makes things much worse, and just at that point where you think things can't get any worse, these things show up. I love, love, llloooovvveeee the shot when you see it standing behind her. Such a good film.

His other horror film Dog Soldiers is one my favorite werewolf films as well.

This movie is amazing! It is probably one of the top 10 creepiest movies i've ever seen! At first the story sounded cliche, but they did very well making it interesting! The acting was some of the best i've seen! And the ending.... me and my friend were speechless at the end. So unfair to the poor girl but still, amazing movie!

you are so right, it was'nt very scary, but it would be especially if you are claustraphobic. It is very suspenceful and bloody and truly awesome. Same as ghost ship and Triangle. Those are awesome movies, have you seen part 2 yet

Capstain259 [2010-09-07 15:54:58 +0000 UTC]

well, thank you for the unintentional warning, i will now make a note to NEVER watch this movie, as i am fairly claustrophobic. am i having a heart attack just rading your description of this scene, for me there are very few things worse than getting stuck in a tight, dark, and unescapable tunnel, dear lord i am getting faint just typing about it. i hate caverns and caves.
