I can't be of any help about painting it right but I can assure you it works well the way you did it.
I would say it's been done with your style. Therefore, it's a kind of signature ans there's no false one.
However, I understand what you mean. Still, you don't have to blush. It actually gives texture and a certain pattern to the cloth.
