Description
**One of the impacts of Spanish Silver (mined by native South Americans) and round-the-world Spanish trading in the 1500's, was that the Spanish Talero (dollar) became the first world-wide coin. By 1831 the Spanish dollar (Peso) equaled eight of a smaller coin called a Real; so the Peso was a "Piece-o-eight." Many nations that minted their own coins based it on the widely used Spanish dollar, including the newly formed United States in 1780; but the young USA had so little of its own silver to mint new coin, that Spanish dollars and Reales continued to be widely used; the Real was referred to as a "bit", making the USA quarter a "two-bit coin." And the rest is history...
