Description
Yehaw; Stephen Austin, the "Father of Texas!" He never married, but he was a gifted organizer and man of words who brought thousands of Anglos into Texas. As I have already mentioned in this comic, Texas was a massive land of hardship and opportunity, farming and raiding; that Mexico didn't have enough people to settle and defend against encroaching European powers and the young-but-ambitious United States. Stephan's father was one of handful of American "Empresarios" who swore loyalty to Mexico in return for land grants in Texas at the start of the 19th century. The Empresario plan could have worked for a while under Spanish control, but when Mexico gained independence and political parties and government debt in the 1820's, the relationship with its citizens in general...and 'Gringos' (white immigrants) in particular, became stormy. The growing conflict is what brings our "gifted man-of words" Stephen Austin down to Mexico City to try to work things out.
