Description

Since I did Thor, and I imagine you guys figured it out with the last entry, it was inevitable that I'd tackle the All-Father Odin himself!

One thing I knew I wanted to do from the beginning was do a version of him that didn't look like an overmuscled barbarian Santa Claus the way he is typically portrayed in a lot of art. I knew for a long time that I wanted the raven-headed cloak/cape seen here, but not much else beyond that; broadly speaking, I was imagining something akin to King Hrothgar and King Beowulf as they appeared in the animated Beowulf movie, with the more sci-fi armor trappings I established with Norse Thunder Woman and Thor.

The first stirrings of an idea beyond that came last year with the release of Elden Ring when I saw Godfrey/Hoarah Loux. While that character does lean a bit into that "warrior king/barbarian" aesthetic I was trying to lean away from, I felt he was suitable enough to use as a basis for my version of Odin; you can see traces of him in the bluish-color scheme and the braided beard. I was originally going to give this Odin an almost Super-Sayain-esque vertical hair akin to Godfrey, but when I tried that it made him a bit TOO warrior-esque for my comfort. Another key bit of influence was last year's "The Northman" as well, and you may see some nods to that movie when I get around to making Freyja and updating Bolvadur.

Then came along God of War: Ragnarok's excellent depiction of Odin as a manipulative "magician mafia don", and while I can't deny some small influence, for the most part I worked to avoid making this Odin look too much like that Odin, with any similarities coming down to decisions I'd already made in advance or drawing on the same historical influences and sources as the artists for that game. I did a lot of research on viking chiefs and Scandinavian kings from those centuries, and there's a lot of general agreement I saw across the board. My main deviation, apart from "sci-fi"-ing it up and hewing to the design elements of my Thor/Norse TW, was sticking to a cool color palette of mostly blue, as vikings and settlers of the era tended to be a bit more colorful, especially kings and nobility. I originally did have more reds/purples in there, but they just didn't work and I eventually settled on the above.

Originally, the eyepatch was going to be part of a circlet crown with Odin's ravens on it, but then I recalled a memory of "Excalibur" and the metal cap that Merlin wore in it. So I took that and filtered it through "Phantom of the Opera" to create this odd golden cap/half-mask in lieu of the eyepatch, which I quite like as a bit of a more distinct personal touch to make this version stand out. Then all I needed to do was create Gungnir, and viola!

In terms of story, he'll appear somewhere in the middle of the second quarter of the TW timeline as the "Mystery Traveler" you saw in the last entry, which is Samantha's first realization that the pantheic multidimensional reunion with Earth is much closer than she had realized, corresponding with her, Hera, and Athena getting progressively stronger. This leads into Samantha having encounters with other beings from different realms, such as the Ahriman cult high priest Devimaghan and Az'Dahak, as well as other Olympians managing to travel to Earth individually under their own power, such as Ares and Hades, culminating in the initial conclusion of the conflict between TW and Hera that results in the mad god-queen getting deposed and imprisoned in Tartarus.

As for Odin and his kin, they show up much later on in the middle of the third quarter, after Olympus has remerged with Earth and some conflicts, such as a coup attempt by Artemis and Apollo, and an invasion of Olympus by a special international military taskforce backed by Miranda Iryn and Apotheos. The Nine Realms are the next to appear, setting up a new conflict between Olympus and Asgard that is less "good and evil" and more "neighborhood squabble that went too far." Odin, Thor, Freyja, and any other Nordic god with be the antagonists in this, albiet not without the Olympians and human authorities making their own contributions to stirring things up, though the ultimate cause will be and teamup of Loki (who, though ultimately responsible, will not be a full villain here; I'll explain when I get around to making him) and Hera (recently escaped from Tartarus and acting on her own as a rogue, ironically empowered a bit by no longer being an official Olympian with a title). After the dust is settled from that, Odin and gang will naturally be involved in later conflicts involving the pantheons, from battling each other to battling humanity to battling alien invaders to battling the angels of Shamayim and the demons of Gehenna. Yeah, most of the latter half of the Thunder Woman timeline will shift from superheroics to divine politics and a series of apocalyptic events. It's gonna be nuts.

Odin himself will be Zeus' counterpart in terms of politicking and strategizing, with Thor serving as a more direct, physical rival (although Herakles will also get involved a bit). He's a definite schemer, so there'll be twists and turns involving him and what he does, including a big one which I won't share but comes much later after we think we know everything about who he is and the why behind what he does. For a clue, it ties into a bit of the historical context around the Norse myths and our current conceptions of them.

And that's it! Hope you guys like this version of Odin, and stay tuned for more new character goodness!
