Description
It wasn’t that she thought he was attractive, or likeable in any sort of way. In fact, she saw him as more of an annoyance. The way he existed was enough for her. He laughed everything off, couldn’t keep a straight face about anything, and any thought of a serious conversation could be thrown straight out the window. He had a complete disregard to his own safety, a pure carelessness that she had never seen before. He was so utterly disinterested in his own life, and maybe that’s what intrigued her the most. No, she was not after any sort of romantic pursuit. The only thing she was after was his history, to get under his skin and see what he was really about. Her mother always told her that her most dangerous quality was her desire to know others. She was fascinated by humans. She always had to see people on a deeper level, to learn all their secrets and meet the person behind the act. It got her in trouble plenty of times. Yet time and time again, she found herself in this same position.
She hadn’t meant to follow him out that morning. She had taken Ace out for a walk, when she found the fresh tracks. There was only one other person more stupid than her to go out on a morning as brisk as this one. It wasn’t hard to spot the orange horse against the white hillside either. Lucy wrapped the lead rope around and tied it in a loop under the stallions chin as makeshift reins. “Come on, Ace.. we need an adventure.” She smiled. She felt like one of those cliché horse girls in the movies, riding her shimmery stallion in the great wide open into danger. This was her chance, she was sure, with the two of them in the quiet of the forest. Where was he even going?
The woods were deceiving though, and soon the tracks started to blend in with every other disturbance in the snow. Tracking people down looked a lot easier in the movies… oh well, maybe she would turn back.
Just as she gave in, she spotted one of the old dairy barns that perched along the countryside. It wasn’t rare or anything special either to find these old relics from a better time. It was desolate now, with the red paint chipping away to a dark brown wood. It was a miracle it hadn’t fallen apart yet. It wasn’t the barn that caught her eye, she had visited that spot plenty of times on her own. It was the horse tied out front to one of the trees. She hopped down from Ace, securing him to an old metal fence post and approaching the barn.
“I knew you were following me.”
She nearly jumped out of her skin. There he was; it made her stomach roil, knowing he had been aware of her the entire time and was just waiting.
“No! …. Kind of- yes?” Lucy crossed her arms.
“Well. What’s the deal, Mcdonald?” He stepped closer with a grating amount of confidence. Lucy wished she could steal an ounce of it. “Got a crush on me? Spit it out, I won’t bite.”
“Absolutely not!” She nearly choked on the audacity of the claim. “Rooney- God! I would never- not in a million years- don’t even flatter yourself!"
He arched a brow, feigning offense. “You could have just said no.”
“Jesus, would it kill you to act like a real person? You’re so… ingenuine! You act like… It’s all a spectacle to you, and- and I just want to know why, Rooney.”
“What are you, a cop?”
“I just don’t get it. I don’t get you.”
“You don’t have to get me.” He grinned in a way that felt more like a dog baring its teeth than a smile. She knew she should back off, but that wasn’t exactly her nature. People always caved for her; he would be no different.
“See, that right there. You’re so vague and cryptic.”
“And you’re very direct.” He started walking away from her now. “But hey, I’ll be straight with you: I barely know you. I’ve only been here a couple months and we’ve had a handful of short conversations. You’re a nice girl, but I don’t owe you anything.”
“No, you don’t, but is it so bad that I’m intrigued by you?” She followed after him, breathless with exasperation. “I want to get to know you, Rooney. Like, genuinely. Maybe following and cornering you was a weird way to ask, but what about tomorrow? We can hangout. Talk and hang! Get lunch, maybe?”
He laughed at the idea, leveling his gaze on her. “No, Lucy.”
“Ugh! Why! Why no!”
“Because, no.” Now his voice was firm, leaving little room for debate. He went a step further, sneering at her. “I don’t want to have lunch with you, and I don’t want you to be my little bestie either just because you think I’m so ‘ingenuine’. My bosses are your parents, and that’s all there is to it. Let’s keep it professional.”
“You don’t have to be my ‘bestie’, I’m not saying that. But I don’t know a damn thing about you! You didn’t even tell my parents where you’re from. Why can’t you tell us even that?” She was grasping at straws, trying to keep the conversation going until he cracked.
He wasn’t having it though, his blue eyes freezing over. “Lucy. You’re being crazy. Get a grip, and stop trying to pry into my life.” And then he was gone.
She felt stupid as she remained there, feeling hurt and rejected. No one had ever turned her away so fast, and so harshly. Was she crazy..? She sniffed, rubbing at her chest, before turning and walking as fast as she could.

The background looks amazing!!
I love your use of pastel colors, the pinks, light purples, and blues really blend together so magically! <33
I love the strokes you used to define and color the snow, and the pine trees look so realistic, the snow covering the branches is such a nice, realistic detail!
