Description Well, a lot of people have wanted a sprite tutorial, so here it is!
Obviously there are loads of ways to sprite and this is just my own, but I'm sure it'll help you getting started.
You can sprite on pretty much any painting program- from Photoshop to MS Paint, it reall doesn't matter what you use. I use Corel Paint Shop Pro but that's only because it's the only one I have.

1. Open a new 96x96 canvas, and make sure your brush and eraser are both size 1 with a hardness of 100.
Use a red (255 red, 0 blue, 0 green) circle for the head and two for the body, and just sketch some red lines for the legs. I know most people prefer to sketch the outline without guidelines when spriting, but I usually struggle with that. Another way some people start their sprite is to do the colours first then the outline, but I've never understood how the hell that's even possible.

2. On a new layer, draw the outline in black and one pixel thick. I only ever draw on the top eyelid.

3. Remove the layer with the guidelines (or just hide it).

4. Fill in the base colours with the bucket tool. You decide whether you do this on a new layer or not- I just do it on the same layer to make it quicker.

5. Use the paint brush to put in the other base colours.

6. Add shading. On Pokemon sprites the light comes from the top left but if you want to do something different, feel free.

7. For each colour, get two darker shades. These will be your lineart colours. If it helps, put them to the side of the sprite.
Colour over the lineart with the darkest colour- I colour all the lineart, but most people leave the darkest bits black.

8. Get the lighter colour and highlight the areas that the light hits.

9. I always put a white outline around my sprites, but that's optional.

Remember to save as a PNG- never JPEG!

So yeah. Here's my sprite tutorial. It probably wasn't very helpful (I'm terrible at explaining stuff ), but I think it'll give beginners a general idea on how to sprite.

If you use this to help you, please let me know in the comments.
Feel free to ask any questions ^^

Good tutorial, I like how you map out the shapes in the initial stage with the spheres, never thought of that before.

Thanks Yeah, I've never really gotten the hang of just sketching the lineart, and it made sense to me seeing as I use guidelines when drawing

Yeah, it makes total sense when you think about it but for some reason I just never thought of transferring it into spriting! Still, I suppose things like that are only obvious to some (me) when someone points them out

Maybe it's because there's never been any tutorials saying 'use guidelines in sprites'. They all say just sketch the outline, but I find that really difficult to get right
Or you're just speshul.

Also, it would help with colouring; if you have the shapes inside the body to give the sprite form, it's easier to see where the colours would go

I am speshul, I have a badge to proove it.

I maded it with some paper and glue and, and, and some sticky glitter
