Description
This was my very first character design for model sheet. This was done back in 2002 when I attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Florida.
The character I call Banjo Joe is but a simple country bumpkin who loved playing the banjo and stealing pies.
When the model sheets were completed, my teacher immediatly put them on display along with the maquette I made as well.
I've come a long way since my first. But I thought my very first model sheet still deserved recognition.

I never really gave it much thought about Banjo Joe's origin.
But if I were to recall, it was two things.
1. Memorable locations- When ever I visit my relatives in the peaceful smokey mountains of Middlesboro Kentucky, I can't help but relax outside on the porch, take a little hike and see the beautiful fireflies at night. I think it lead to the inspiration of a loving down to earth character that I would someday create.
2. Classic characters- For design and personality, I think it was do to the many classic characters I watched for the first time. I immediately thought of Goofy in his earliest cartoons when he was but a simple happy go lucky character. Now that I think about it, I think that's where I got the design idea for his big shoes and bent posture. Only I thought it might be more amusing to have one shoe split open.
Joe's favorite instrument the banjo was definitely inspired by Kermit the Frog playing his banjo in a swamp scene from the "The Muppet Movie". It was a moving song.
The idea of Joe stealing pies came from Woody Woodpecker's personality. Woody was a character who did little work as possible, being clever and sneaky or just being a free loader when it came to getting a meal.
