I think GIMP was used just for croping( I am sure for 95%, but it is quite old so...).

The process was about tweaking amps, distrortions and delay. So the answer is Audacity.

If you think wordpad - there is not much to do. Audacity (or other audio editors) have endless amount of possibilities.
