Description
Sketch of a mountain top village/castle. Late medieval-esque/19th century architecture built on the ruins of an ancient castle, features a row of "tall" storefronts, outdoor pavilion, other unusual buildings, and a monumental hall of some sort with huge dormers and a tower. Single road access leading to a gate.Is it a 19th century/steampunk village with an important industry or purpose? Is it a modern Disney-esque theme park? A chapter in a Harry Potter book? Maybe it's the Academy of Traditional Architecture and it's actually a learning institution? RPG game, hand-held, or "big screen" game environment? You decide!
Pencil sketch with Faber-Castell pencils. Scanned, color-tweaked, cleaned up and labeled on the computer.

I think you may like this reference for perimetral walls:

It's the Wartburg Castle in Germany, its one of those castles halfway between a town and a palace.

Yes, very good stuff. But I wouldn't want to live in that room that hangs off the edge. Would you?

Or a toilet. You just flush and it drops out through a hole in the floor, onto the enemy or your veggie garden.

This image is similar to how I see the North Village in my Oz prequel, "The Hidden History of Oz, Book One: The Witch Queens", available on Amazon ([link] ). The winding path is a beautiful, sinuous curve to draw the eye from the shadows into the light and up to the castle.
This definitely looks like a castle built in a time of peace. It is a show of strength and power, but it does not strike me as heavily fortified. In that sense, it is a perfect fit for the North Village. It has been several generations since war has come to the Land of Oz. But all that changes ...

Yes, I think that's a good view. The town is based on commerce with an open air market and storefronts lining the street. The fortifications come from an earlier era. So, you wrote this book already it sounds like? I'm getting more and more requests for castle designs, book cover illustrations, etc.

The book is written. It's available on Amazon. I'm not looking for a cover design. I just wanted to share my story with readers of fantasy and adventure.
Oz will be everywhere in a few months. Might as well get started now, right?

Okay, sounds good. Yes, I saw you had a nice cover, was wondering more about illustrations maybe. Why will Oz be everywhere? Movie coming out?

Oz will be everywhere for several reasons. First of all, the MGM movie, "The Wizard of Oz", was released in 1939. Its 75th anniversary is coming up in 2014. There is a movie, "Dorothy of Oz" coming out in December 2012. Disney has a prequel movie, "Oz, the Great and Powerful" coming in March 2013. With all of the Merchandising Power between Disney and Warner Brothers (who holds the rights to the MGM movie), we will see a lot of Oz in the next two years.
There has not been a lot of exploration into the Land of Oz in the recent past. There are a number of written books set in Oz, but they are not written for today's audience. They are written with the same type of whimsy that Baum wrote 100 years ago.
My story is written in the cinematic, visual style of today, and still staying true to the original vision of Oz. You can read more about my project and vision of Oz on my blog [link] .

Since you're an expert, what is "Oz" really about in a nutshell?

whaleofatale2012 In reply to Built4ever [2013-01-05 16:29:03 +0000 UTC]
Oz was originally intended as a fairy tale with no moral message and no nightmarish creatures to haunt the listeners dreams. It was intended to be pure entertainment and whimsy. L. Frank Baum said that he wanted to create "a modern fairy tale, where the where the heartaches and nightmares are left out."
Many who have followed in Baum's footsteps have reflected his style of whimsy. Nothing ever changes, no one ever ages, and everyone can gallavant out for a day's adventure and then come home and have a big party where everyone wears frilly dresses, and servants exist for the good of the main characters. There is no death, there is no threat, and all outward incursions into Oz are solved by the heroes convincing the bad guys that they don't really want to do wickedly.
In a nutshell, Oz (as it was originally written) is entertainment for children where idyllic childhood lasts forever.
My stories introduce more shadows into Oz. I don't follow the idyllic path, because it is much more interesting to let the characters walk their own paths, and seeing what steps they take to arrive at Baum's original work. It is a prequel that explains why.

I was pretty scared of Godzilla and other monsters as a kid... That line about servants existing for the good of the main characters, now that's rather interesting too...

I like the way you draw attention to the major details, and just slightly touch down on other elements, keeping the picture from getting too cluttered up. drawing a village could get really overwhelming otherwise.

Built4ever In reply to overground55 [2012-10-28 16:41:26 +0000 UTC]
Yes, when I start to define more clearly some of the elements, I run the risk of it getting very busy and convoluted visually. Sometimes, they look better at this stage...
