Description Sketch of a mountain top village/castle. Late medieval-esque/19th century architecture built on the ruins of an ancient castle, features a row of "tall" storefronts, outdoor pavilion, other unusual buildings, and a monumental hall of some sort with huge dormers and a tower. Single road access leading to a gate.

Is it a 19th century/steampunk village with an important industry or purpose? Is it a modern Disney-esque theme park? A chapter in a Harry Potter book? Maybe it's the Academy of Traditional Architecture and it's actually a learning institution? RPG game, hand-held, or "big screen" game environment? You decide!

Pencil sketch with Faber-Castell pencils. Scanned, color-tweaked, cleaned up and labeled on the computer.

Note: File changed out on Oct 31, 2012.

MB, I gotta do something with some kind of Islamic or middle-Eastern style. What should I use as an influence or starting point?

Jalis/Screens with intricate geometric patterns. They had triple duty as they provided privacy, views and the venturri effect which helped cooled the interior by compressing air through the contracted openings in the jali and pushing it into the interior. Sort of like passive air conditioning.

Basically the main focus is a lot of intricate geometry which has references all over the place. I'd go first to the Turkish Hagia Sofia Church/Mosque, Sulemaniye Mosque and other buildings of that region and also look into the various buildings of Uzbekistan in the areas of Samarkand and Bukhara, those have some BEAUTIFUL patterns and use of brick and glazed tiles along with beautiful calligraphy.

You could go to the Indian Mughal Architecture but then everyone does that. You could look into the city of Fatehpur Sikri in India, its made completely of Red Bricks and is very beautiful with all your prerequisites for "Islamic" architecture.

OR, screw everything, Go to Spain, Alhambra, Mosque of Cordoba or Moorish architecture in general. Its more subtle and well in my mind more beautiful. The Palace of Alhambra should be your go to for what a living space/house type building with Middle Eastern influence should espouse.

I could go on and on -_-

I visited Granada. I had an old family friend living in a crappy basement apartment right in the old city. I have pictures. I'm familiar with Samarkand and Bukhara, rug capitals, beautiful architecture.

Very creative! The architecture is brilliant! I absolutely love the fact that it grows up rather than to the side.
The mountain pass in the back is a nice touch!

Built4ever In reply to slowdog294 [2012-10-27 11:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Do it. Dominant color tones? Keep the palette limited. I've been waiting for someone to ask about adding color to something...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

slowdog294 In reply to Built4ever [2012-10-27 16:36:33 +0000 UTC]

OK. I have the full sized image on my hard drive.

I plan on using colours that would represent real life. This castle is of a french motif, and would have slate or tin roofing. It would be fashioned from locally available stones. Thus, I will need to do some research into that. Also, since the sky is clear, there will be a lot of sheen on the windows and roof material. Since it is a clear sunny day, shadows are going to be a beast to get right.

Since the image is HUGE and highly detailed, it is going to take me a LONG time to do it justice with the many thin overlays of transparent colour so that your original pencil strokes show through. My goal is not to cover up what you drew, rather, to enhance your pencil artwork in colour so that it looks photorealistic yet still has that beautiful pencil drawn quality. That is not going to be an easy task.

Thanks for letting me try, my friend. Be patient, please. The wait will be worth it.

Cool, sounds fabulous, and sounds like you're thinking ahead about window reflections, shadows, etc. You can change the lighting if you want, make it partly cloudy day with less dramatic shadows. Slate and stone as primary materials sounds like a greyish color palette. although you could make the stone a chalky creamy color like you see in parts of France or central Texas. Slate can get greenish grey here in U.S. if it is from Vermont, the best slate available. Keep in mind, France would also have ceramic tiles on the roof, typically a brownish color depending on region.

I just replaced the file for the first castle I did by the way, and it's darker, more detailed, just a bit better. I plan on darkening and defining this one, castle number two, and replacing the file eventually. Will that affect anything? What program will you use? Keep snapshots of progress along the way, like a tutorial.

I will work from this wonderful image, since it was the original eyecatcher for me. Do realize that it will take a lot of time for me to do this, so as I go, I will send the images as WIPs to the scraps folder. The final work will go in the feature gallery. Thanks for the tips and also for letting me do this collaborative work.
