Description Some of you have seen earlier shots of this major project of mine in my own home. It's 90 per cent done now. I feel like I could write a thesis paper on all the features, construction gimmicks, specialized panels, do's and don'ts, etc., huge learning curve. I have hundreds of hours in this room. The doorway just to the right of the bench has just been finished minus stain on the piers or sides of the doorway. The sink area will include two tall narrow cabinets to the right of the work sink, and two cabinets up top. The back panel features a tile back splash, primarily travertine. Small side panel gets same treatment. A shelf will be built above the backsplash. All panels are removable! I can always access electrical and pipes behind the walls.

A tremendous amount of time goes into even a small panel. For example, there are 4 small panels, 2 white and 2 stained, around the doorway, each 7 to 9 inches wide, very narrow. Yet each one has 7 to 9 pieces of wood. Lots of work for tiny wall coverage. White panels have a custom made almost square molding on each side with a rabbet to accept the center panels, either 3/4" pine or V-groove pine boards.

Have I lost my mind? By the way, a prominent use of this room will be for doggie feeding, watering, etc.

"All panels are removable! I can always access electrical and pipes behind the walls." - Really nice extra touch! Definitely feels like "secret panels" like vonzott's talking about! I love those kitchen panels that turn into hidden spice racks - like [link] , so brilliant! ♥

You have no idea, I need those spice storage gimmicks REALLY BADLY.

Beautiful stuff (as always). Did you do any "secret panel" stuff? (ala, Green & Green) - those are always fun.

it's pretty amazing stuff ... they built the homes AND the furniture. I'm pretty sure they did the landscaping, too!

The tour is pretty much just the way you described it. And very cool...

Where did they hide the plans?

I dunno ... but there are plenty of books on G&G, maybe there are some in there. OK, most certainly there are some in there...

They need more books on other architects and less on FLW and G&G. Many talented unknowns out there need recognition.

I really like the stained finish on this, and could do without paint entirely even though it might be just a little monochromatic as a result of eliminating the white.

Built4ever In reply to LancelotPrice [2013-02-03 14:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Correct. The white paint is part of the function. This space needs good lighting and has only one window, so I opted for a mix of white painted panels and lightly stained woodwork. I love it. They set each other off very well. White painted V-groove looks fantastic, very strong wall system.

Thanks, glad you like, its very quirky and unusual design, no doubt about it, but the functions are all there, bench, work sink, storage cabinets, etc... the design changes a bit as you build it...
