EDIT: I entered this in *ssilence 's macro contest. You can submit three deviations though, so maybe I'll get to try again before the deadline.

Let's just say a set that may seem impossible to win, but there's a road to victory.

Very interesting concept, and I like the composition, but I think the other version is better. I like how the focus is on the red

yeah lots of other people said the same thing. hence, the new version.

cool macro shot, I like the prespective. it gives a very good depth of field, not somthing usual in macro shots.

I want that middle piece to be in focus! It looks unnatural, it not being in focus.
Otherwise this would be a great piece!

ya, unfortunately i couldn't keep the composition and focus that one. so i went for the focus on the red one instead. i guess i had to choose composition or technique, and i went for composition. i'll keep trying though! thanks for your comment .

I see!
Have you considered having the red piece in the middle position?

I could do that, but to get that size it would still be in focus. I tried moving farther back so the front one would be in focus but i didn't like the overall look as much. I'll try it again, maybe i could take it farther out and crop (although this would reduce the quality I guess).

Ah; I see. Yep, that is a problem. Ironically, compacts seem to do macro shots relatively more easily!
Not that I have done ANY, mind. I live in an architectually supreme city and I have not yet had the inspiration to do any macro photographs.
I _know_ what I will do, it will be statues / stonework. I am just looking for the perfect shot, still. I even have a few candidates!
Maybe I will do this near the end of March, I have a week off then.

yeah, i need macro stuff for my d50, it would be better.
I love architecture too... the weather was crappy so I decided to fiddle with macro

I am similarly pratical in my choice of photo subjects; I did a good number of night photos because my weekend sleep cycle was off-synch (caused by too much clubbing).

Does look very effective indeed
I have the macro ringset for the 350d, and apart from lack of autofocus and aperture control, it does work rather nicely

I bought mine off ebay, for not too much at all, so have a look around for one that matches your camera, and you should be able to find something

Interesting shot! Did you focus the stones after the middle of the picture on purpose? I guess I'd like it more if the big stone would be focused...
Actually I would really like to see a difference of a real macro lens and a normal one...Isn't the difference just that you can get even closer to the object? But I guess when you can zoom to the object with a normal one...don't you then get the same result?

bukephalas In reply to Adlerauge [2006-03-07 17:49:19 +0000 UTC]
na, it has to do with the focusing distance i think. i mean, i tried this with my d50 and kit lens (18-55). i could get almost this close, but i couldn't really get the detail i got in this one. i tried everything, zooming, manual, everything. it just couldn't get as close as the p&s, which has a 10x optical zoom and macro setting.
about the focus thing, yeah, i did it on purpose. i took about 20 photos in different arrangements, different depth of fields, different points of focus, but i liked this one the best. i wanted the red one to be in focus so as to stand out more. thanks for your input though!

Very beautiful shot! I was considering of buying extension rings too but the loss of apperture stops is too big and studio lighting is necessery.

oh really? darn. maybe reversing rings then. if i get the 50mm 1.8 (really cheap) it's easily used with reversing rings, and i can stack it on my kit lens too...

Oh it's not, my biggest problem was memorizing the characters, but even that didn't take too long. The horse is my favorite one. A lot of the pieces move in similar ways, but the territorial boundaries are different.

I don't have a macro lense/or feature theres a trick to that try shooting the shot from another angle instead of dead ahead... I get my flowers by putting other things behind them or focusing on one object in FRONT. Some turn out 'macro' but its not.

well, i'd rather not have to use my p&s at all. the quality isn't as good as my d50. i'm hoping for extension tubes or a reversing rings and the 50mm 1.8 soon.

beautiful photo. i really like the lighting and depth of field is excellent. i am not sure how this photo would benefit from a macro lens.

oic why people are confused. i didn't use the d50 to make this shot, i had to use my p&s; the d50 can't get this close because i don't have a macro lens (or alternative get-close device).

Wow...excellent photographic skills!
Every detail of each piece is so finely captured...even more remarkable is the visual suspense you captured by leaving the "enemy" piece just out of focus...it really adds suspense!
Excellent work. Keep it up!
