Description
I decided I liked this one too much not to post it. Sorry for the out-of-orderliness.I believe she's wearing the hairstyle known as the "Peach" - as mentioned in the "Memoirs of a Geisha" novel. I also think she's an apprentice (red collar).
Kyoto, Japan

oh i think that's what they were there for, to be noticed. there were at least ten other people at various times (all japanese) trying for a photo.

Cool I've just always envisioned them to be a bit more discreet..
It is a beautiful shot though. I should have mentioned how much I enjoyed the framing!

This is very lovely! I like how you've taken the picture from the side/behind so the viewer can see the details of her costume and hair. That must have taken hours to do...

thank you i think a lot of maiko/geisha now where wigs. but, if it's their own hair, i know that they go to a special hairdresser only every few days, because it's a painful process. so they don't have to get it done every day.

the red coller also symbolizes that she is an apprentice geisha, as well as the large obi in the back, and by the way i really enjoyed the movie, of course i love pretty much anything japanese , but anyways if you have read the book you get a whole new glance at the movie because i took my friend to see it and she said that it was great and it explained alot, and i told her well the book tells alot more but i was glad she liked it, and that to read the book.
by the way this is a great picture and very beautiful

it is called "the split peach" it is mentioned in the "memoirs of a geisha" book they said the reson why its called a split peach is because well it looks like a split peach but also if a guy is behind the girl looking at them its supposed to i guess make the male think of a vagina. and that all the apprentice geisha's wear this hairstyle.

The composition is interesting because it is a bit disorderly in contrat to the perfection of the geisia.

Definitely maiko, Kate. The red collar gives it away. Plus, the size of the obi.
Have you seen the movie? Worthwhile? I read the book when it first came out, so I'm interested. Spent so much time in Gion trying to catch glimpses of them, I'm interested.

I liked the book except for the ending - which I thought was highly unrealistic. I've heard both good and bad about the movie and was planning to see it in the theatre, but this now looks unlikely due to time/travel etc. May have to be a download.
