It's part of a personal worldbuilding x narrative project. I always wanted to focus more on 2D design and concept art by doing a worldb. project, and since I found out that I am super interested in analysing narrative in movies I decided to come up with a story myself which then takes place in the post-apocalyptic world I want to design. Because of this, I only have to design the important characters the protagonist meets, the buildings they go to, and the props they use instead of just 20 different ideas of a post-apoc looking character or weapon and such. This is a random illustration however. The designs of my project are still in progress
(Its a long story with a big world history and explanations, I'll spare you by trying to make it short 
So who they are and what inspired this piece? Her story takes place in 2150, 53 years after society fell down and basically everything went to shit because chainreactions.
Josie fled her home country Iceland with her father when she was young and arrived on Faroe Islands by accident. A sun worshipping community that took them in are scared of the outside world cus of the apocalypse, they want to stay hidden and undiscovered for the possible threats. Josie grows up believing that its dangerous too yet since she came from there she's curious and constanly roams around with her dog Freyja to look at the ruins from the "previous world". One day when she does, a plane comes to the islands for the first time since her arrival 15 years ago. The pilot, a soldier from the army in Norway, has an engine malfunction. After a little struggle they build a secret friendship. He answers all her questions and shows his items, and she secretly brings him food until it becomes clear that both the pilot and the community need each other. The community to fix their conflict, and the pilot to continue his journey. They have to reveal themselves and gain trust in one another.
How long it took me? Thats hard to tell. It started out on paper with the intention of cleaning it up in the scan a bit for a nice line art drawing. But I got carried away and went full digital painting. So I have no idea how long it took me, and I always went back to tweak it.

This is a fantastic explanation on how you have come up with this wonderful world; I love the fact that you are patient - you have an idea but create what is needed rather that what must be - something I must employ with myself
The overall story is not just sensible, it makes sense; to me a great narrative is one that is clear, continuous, and not trying to be clever; the commune would isolate themselves from the rest of humanity because as we all know, there is a serious amount of evil out there; exploiters, scum, villains, and worse.
The plane and the pilot, is a very interesting idea; and what I like is that you are not riding on today's politics or topics - the lass is Irish, the pilot is Norwegian, and the commune is NOT in America.
The pic is brilliant - and hey, I can see that it is a labour of love; I hope you keep this going, the possibilities are endless

I got really carried away with this idea but it's great to always have something to think about or find inspiration
for from other media. Especially if I can use these ideas for art and never bored
Yeh exactly! Every choice has concequences and I gotta find out how to make it all work in the end
I also have a "spin-off" story in mind for the pilot, how he went from a young boy to being in the army. I actually use that for a school project
right now because I have more character's already thought through in his story than hers. But I'll make art for both eventually.
Ah correction she's Icelandic
It always takes place in the US, UK, France, Japan etc, and then the big cities in ruins. Especially when it comes to post-apocalypse settings so I thought it'll be a
fun idea to try it in the scandinavian areas and in villages that managed to settle down in this new world back-to-basic instead of the protagonist coincidently finding canned food
in abandoned apartments ready to eat.
