I can see Zoro start to spar with Usopp after Eneis Lobby or Thriller Bark. Usopp started to improve in his self-confidence but still lacked training.
Zoro wouldn't actually train.But he knows that Usopp is very observant in battle and learns quickly. Sparring would be Zoro's way to help Usopp get experience.

A pistol would be cut in two too easy. I can see Usopp creating the Kaubto to withstand greater force.
And the cool thing is that in the Forest of Gluttony we see that the Kabuto can be separated in two pieces.
