how do you do that little white edge around your characters?

(the art program i use is firealpaca so idk if this is different on other programs f)
What i do is i have my background color on a separate layer, and then with the wand tool i select the background and then go to 'select' -> 'contract' and enter to however many pixels. Then i go to 'select' -> 'inverse' and use the fill tool to fill all of the selected space with whatever color I want the edge to be. Then after i deselect everything it's done
