-Ben was kidnapped when he was very young. He and his family decided to leave the village of Uppy and move to live near the coast, which was a bad decision. His family was targeted, they killed his parents and then took him home as a test subject. They wanted him to become the master of something called Shadow. He then meets a pokemon named Maya, she treats Ben very well, saying that she is the daughter of the ship's owner so she can ask them to be gentler with him. But then through a conversation with the soldiers on the ship he learned that Maya was actually kidnapped just like him. He talked about this with Maya and then planned to run away with her.
