You know what I don't get? How only Lily's love affected anyone. I mean, James was willing to die to protect both Lily and Harry. Shouldn't that have at least given Lily tha protection, and then since she was still willing to die to protect Harry it should've saved them all except James.

The only explanation I can think of (that still won't explain it really) is maybe that James probably didn't intend to die. He was willing to die, of course, but I don't think he went into battle with Voldemort thinking "I will sacrifice myself for my wife and son" more like "I will fight to keep them safe". While Lily was thinking more like "I will die myself so my son will not." Or something. All very hypothetical guesses.... >___>

Or just the fact that if that happened Harry's story wouldn't be as interesting. Otherwise JKR probably would've made Lily kill herself when Harry was 3 out of depression.

I think her reasoning may have been sexist, "A mothers Love"=Oldest magic there is, mother/all women, have the inherent need to nurture and protect the innocent/their loved ones, no matter the cost, you hear of mothers who find out child birth may kill them (after half way through the 2nd trimester) they still go through with it to save the life the carry.
Were as James, "A fathers Love" is to protect, he was not thinking of dieing he was thinking of protecting his family. James and harry have the "Gryffindor" Mentality and courage, which in turns to I will die for you but I will try my best to protect you and live to see you grow.
Also the fact magic seems to be very oral in it's incantation even just saying those words when faced with death may have been the binding point of the actual magic. Who knows, but look at Rowlings past, single mom, poor, she is probably not going to give the man a lot of credit with saving ickle Harry.

every time i think of this scene, i can't help but feel greatful my parents are alive and i know them and they weren't killed adn i wasn't shoved in with my Uncle and Aunt until i realized and was told something that changed my life and made my life so complicated to live. I give props to Harry Potter, James Potter, and Lily Potter for giving up everything they had in life for another person, was willing to die for them, for i could have never done what they did. They 3 are truly Heros.
