Yeah, there are quite a few homeless people in Tokyo. You can spot them at all major stations. It goes kind of under the radar even for the locals.

Is it thought in Japan to be homelessness from economic circumstance or for psychological reasons - - simply disconnecting from the society? It seems in major US cities its a genuine mixture of both almost in equal parts because both the social net and the mental health system are so deficient.

Yes, many people say it is due to psychological reasons or people simply wanting to disconnect. I think it's a mixture of both. It is also predominantly males who are homeless.
