Description This is the partlist i used for assembling my motorized wings. It could answer your question: " how did he do that?" . For the DIY tinkerers this could be an opportunity to shortcut some R&D work. Please note that these drawingings and notes are 'as-is'. It is a custom design with custom made parts; it is just to give you a general idea how it is done..

I am willing to share for free, but if you find my information useful, you could reward my efforts by sending me some drink money when you finished your own wings

edit aug2014:
I receive a lot of questions about the motors i used.
the four motors on the wings are 6watt Dunker motors. Type G30.1. The needed gearing ratio depends on the lead screw pitch. I used a (fairly large) 12mm pitched leadscrew, just because i found them in my workshop. If the pitch is low (like normal screw thread) you will need higher rotation speed, which causes unwanted vibrations. If your motor is not strong enough, you could gain force by reducing the speed of the wing movement (folding, lifting); choose a different gearing ratio. The gas spring is there to help the motor lift the wing. You should test your own frame design before spending your money on the wrong parts. Remember that this design is sort of improvised.
The 2 big flapping motors are Nidec GMPD 404764 types. speed=18RPM. Torque is 4Nm. Power is 7.5W. Maybe too strong (=too heavy) because they still lift the wings when i am in a horizontal position, which is not really required.
To get rid of all the design flaws, i changed/upgraded the design to bushitaka.deviantart.com/galle…, which could be made into bird/bat or moth wings. This frame is less heavy. not only because its span is reduced, but more because the bulky motors & gearing are optimized (minimized).
Somehow I choose to use 24V motors: high(er) voltage means lower current. I thought that would be good for the battery life. I used 20 rechargeable AA cells. Good results with eneloop cells. don't believe the high-capacity claims on cheaper brands. The smaller moth frame is a 12V system, because i got rid of the 2 big current-draining motors. Saves weight too. I guess that any motor that need more the 1Amp to run, need some sort of calculation; just to be sure you are on the safe side.

Hell ☺️,

I was wondering if there is a replacement for motor G3. 01, seeing as it's not sold where I live.

Hello,
I'm an independent filmmaker working on a sci-fi thriller, and am very interested in your design of your wings. The wings I'm looking to build are dragon/gargoyle wings for an actress who will be playing a sexy minion of the devil. I am very excited about your design because it shows exactly what I've been looking for, but was wondering if you could help me out with a price list? I'm printing out your parts list, but to have a price list to go with it, and where to buy all the parts would be truly awesome! It there any way you can help me with this information? My email is iowadude41@yahoo.com. I'm hoping to begin the building process very soon as I have a few friends to help build them. Thank you in advance for any help you can help with.

Is this for the large set of wings or the smaller ones? How much does the entire unit weigh?

You are amazing.

I'm planning some DC motor wings for my next costume, but you're right, there are very, very few resources out there. Thank you so much for spilling all this data out for us.

Hi! I'm a big fan of your work. I would like to build these but I had a few questions. Do you ever use a soldering iron to connect anything? How do you get the motor controls to connect to your hands? Is there a website you recommend for finding the motors? I am in the USA and we don't have places that sell the motors that I know of. I've never built anything animatronic before and have a feeling I may be way over my head, but I'm obsessed with wings so how can I NOT try? And if I succeed--I'll send you drink money.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bushitaka In reply to Ladywood [2013-01-22 22:13:39 +0000 UTC]

... Soldering action... Well, only the electronics of my e-wings. You dont want to carry heavy plumbing on your back
Controls; i used a micro-joystick like you can find them on a cell phone. I glued the joystick on an elastic-band ring to fit on my index finger. Thumb control. All e-parts should be available @ farnell.com
You could dig for motors on your local crapcar yard, but you could also order them online. I used dunker and nidec motors.
If you have never done something like this before, it will be definitly over your head, but it is also a good reason to try it. Dont try to build the final version in one go, but make some simple prototypes to grow into it.
Good luck

Bushitaka In reply to swandog [2012-02-06 09:22:14 +0000 UTC]

this is roughly how my latest wings work. had to change some details afterwards to eliminate some noise.
My latest design (now busy making)weighs less, moves more 'natural' and is more silent.

I have a tendency to work in miniature, ( see my gallery) but when I get a set, big or little, I will get back to you with a reward as I can only guess at the work load you have put into this project. Congrats!! Didnt know this could be done so well and effectively as you have apparently done! Thanks for your effort. Mike.
