August has spent her life with loving parents and a loving older brother who has never picked on her like most brothers do. She isn't sure why she likes the things she does, no one really is actually. She spends her time waiting patiently for Social Studies and recess.

Middle isn't terrible for her. No one picks on her. She isn't popular, she's just a blank face in a crowd. Teacher express their concern that she likes learning about the morbid parts of war. Adley and Lydia say it's a natural curiosity and they are fully aware of their daughter's interest and if they think it'll ever be a problem, they'll worry about it then.
