Nah, "was the shit" means "was good". "Was shit"=was terrible, but if you put the article "the" in front of it in American English it is slang for "good"
E.g. Pizza is the shit="pizza is good; I like it"
"Pizza is shit"="pizza is absolutely terrible; I do not like it".
