Description This is a digitally colored version of an ink drawing I did way back in 1985. I've tried a couple of color treatments over the years, but till now I hadn't managed anything that I really liked. I do really like this one.

It's softer than most of my recent digital knotwork, and it reminds me of my very early watercolor paintings - when I was really tinting drawings. The colors in those watercolors gradually grew stronger until I often omitted the inks altogether. So this piece resembles some of the paintings I did in the early 80's, while I was making that transition.

I picked this piece to do as part of a project I've just completed. The outer knotwork border uses a pattern I created as part of my new book of Celtic art designs, and this painting is one of the cover designs I'm using on blank books - with Celtic borders on all the pages, and either lined or unlined pages.

The blank books and the Celtic knotwork pattern book are here: [link] - and the pretty cool unlined blank book with this cover is here: [link]

The wood may be tangles, but the forest is guided by an eternal energy form the repetition of which is present and represents unchanging energy structures. The forest is dark and the spell is one of mystery, the knotwork connotates intelligence and the tapping into of the spiritual energy patterns. To be a part of the knotwork is to be a part of the whole. To be separated from the total knotwork means to be in illusion, unhealthy in some way. To find the way in which to reconnect the self to the knotwork is to find a way to reconnect the conscious mind to the unconscious, and the mind to the body. Shamanically.

Well, I'm almost speechless. Obviously one of the truly professional and wonderfully talented artists here. Not that I'm knocking any one else here, including myself. We need people like BWS to learn from and inspire and encourage us.

This has been sitting in my devwatch long enough. I need to stop looking at it and comment why I find it so visually appealing and beautiful. I love how you effectively combined the celtic knot design with a forest - definately a beautiful tangled wood(s). Of course I love the name of the piece.(and there is good reason for that )

one question...i see you did this in '85 so i suppose you didn't use comp. ...now question...how you made that EVERY knot is equel? you have a pattern or what?

btw love it

this is absolutly beautiful.
I just started practicing drawing celtic knot designs, so when i read about someone who has been doing this for nearly 30 years, im just in awe, and really inspired!

The coloring is great, though i generally prefer traditional media, i think you did a good job at keeping it classic.

oh this is magnificent... I love the trees. They remind me of Tolkein gone mad, elves have too much time on their hands, the colours are perfect too. I do some knotwork, nowhere near on this scale of precision and elegance, enough to know how much work goes into this! Wow!

When I roll my mouse wheel up or down, everytime when it moves just one 'step' - the spiral ornaments in the left of the picture look like they weren't sliding along with it
