Description
The time for the fighters to walk out was near. In the crowd near the ring, several professional boxers were sitting in the front row. The fans near Yoojung Lim and Virani MacVicar couldn’t help but watch them and listen to their conversation! Virani had noticed a lot of fans were smiling at them and leaning over to their friends whispering something. Virani turned around and looked at Yoojung.
“Back home fans come up to me all the time. It’s kind of funny seeing the same thing happen to you.”
Yoojung raised an eyebrow at Virani. “What are you talking about?”
Virani tossed her head in a certain direction. “The fans behind us won’t stop looking. I think they’re in love with you.”
Yoojung broke into a quick smile. Her eyes shot briefly to a group of men that were behind her, then she turned back to Virani. “I think they're looking more at you and your gorgeous outfit and necklace.”Virani looked down and tugged at her dressy top for a moment. “That ... is a possibility,” she admitted.
“Well, you are making me look bad” said Yoojung. She smirked and lightly pushed Virani’s shoulder. “Don’t you have enough fans saying how much they're in love with you?”
Virani blushed and looked down sadly. “I'd like to say the thrill is gone ... but ...”
“Oh my god Virani I’m kidding.” Yoojung lightly pushed her again and laughed. “Lighten up a little and relax. For once we're not the ones getting punched in the face tonight.”
Virani chuckled back. “Not getting punched in the face is really nice, though the energy in here makes me wish I was competing.''
Yoojung laughed. “I know how you feel.”
Virani looked at the ring that laid empty, waiting for the main event. “It’s too bad the main event doesn’t have a German fighter in it. I’m not sure how happy the local fans will be about that.”
Yoojung sighed and looked around again. “I think most of them are going to cheer for Karen Carlson to win this fight.”

Trying to show some of the real life sisterhood of boxing. It's still seen as a guy sport by a lot of people so female boxers are up against that together.

You had me at sisterhood.
Unfortunately, I think the struggle for female fighters (and all female athletes) will go on for generations to come. Progress inched along for such a long time, then there seemed to be a period where it really surged ahead. But we're well short of the goal, and we seem to be back to inching again.
But any progress is still progress. And it's a helluva lot better than it once was.

I think women's boxing in the USA missed the boat when Christy Martin held back from fighting Lucia Rijker for REAL money. MMA has taken over and that's where the bif bucks are for the girls who like to grapple as well as box and kick. Women's MMA fights are getting TV time and publicity but a lot of guys still think we suck at it and it's really all still theirs. Female boxers get more respect in other countries but are still not getting big money. But female boxers train as hard as the guys and are often even more dedicated to learning the sport. Ask almost any boxing coach who has trained both guys and girls who listens better and works harder and you will get the same story. The guys have more ego, the girls in the gyms have more to prove and are more dedicated to mastering the skills. The promoters want to hype the rivalries but deep inside girls who box know why others are doing the same as them and that makes a special kind of bond. Yes it's a helluva lot better than it was but it still has a long way to go. Holly Holm said she made more for her one MMA fight with Rousey than she did her entire pro boxing career, and I don't doubt that.

I can tell you and I could have this conversation for hours and hours, but I don't want to clog up this post with all that. One point stood out for me, though.
"...but a lot of guys still think we suck at it."
This is true of fans as well as fighters. I love my brothers and they are, in the grand scheme of things, good people. But I can't watch a fight with them. I tried it once, and it just left me aggravated. They weren't even watching. Just cracking wise.
I think there are three distinct camps on this: those who accept (and sometimes enjoy) women fighting, those that can live with it and those that think it's a total joke. I think we're reaching a point where the middle group is the largest. Not ideal, but it's much better than when that last group held an overwhelming lead. And look... the talent pool in female fighting is constantly growing, but still relatively small. That makes it harder to find great fights. And that's another reason this problem will linger for generations. I think each generation of women will produce more who are interested in fighting. That's where it all begins.

There's also a camp that finds it 'disgusting' as someone in the White House likes to say all the time. Quite a few of my girl friends think I am kind of perverted for being interested in boxing and spending so much of my time with it. So I think female boxers will always be a minority who have to take flak of all kinds from all directions but the adrenaline rush of being in a ring is just the same for both genders so WTF there will always be some who enjoy that and want to do it right if we do it at all. Anyway there are places in the world where guys will turn out to cheer for girls boxing and I just hope those seeds can grow and spread whether or not we get our own jungle one day who knows but it's fun to write and think about.

"...as someone in the White House likes to say..."
Who could you be talking about? I'm totally stumped.
I think we've recently learned that, overall, things in this world haven't changed as much as many of us thought they had. But still...
"Quite a few of my girl friends think I am kind of perverted for being interested in boxing and spending so much of my time with it."
On this specific topic, I think that's where the change needs to start. And I have young daughters. I can tell you that they are growing up in a world of possibilities we didn't have.
Far from perfect, but far from hopeless.

I think change is not always in the right direction but we have to look at the big picture to see overall progress is being made.
When your daughters start to vote you will have made a bigger difference then than you can make now on your own
Patience and tenacity pay off in the end, even if it takes a long time to get where we want to be!
