Basically, it's a psychological one, a mystery of sorts. Each of the characters have their own circumstances, and live in a town called Hinawazama. Every year, there is a "Cotton-drifting" festival, and due to a "curse", someone dies and another disappears on that night.
It's cut up into different "arcs". Each arc gives a different perspective on a situation. Some are useless, while others will bring a revelation to why something happened. So when half of the cast die in the first arc, they are essentially brought back in the next. Might have something to do with time loops, since personalities seem to actually change, like in the case of the detective.
