When I first heard about the contest, I got so many different ideas, it was hard to stick with just one of them.
But in the end, I picked a blackbird as my familiar, instead of the obvious crow, rat or cat.
Why?
Well, one reason is because of a thing my mother told me.

She told me there was a blackbird that had moved in to our backyard. She told me that she believed it to be my grandmother who passed away two years ago.
I asked her about it, and she told me that it was something that my grandmother had told me. She said that when loved ones to her had passed away, she had been visited by blackbirds, and now the same thing happened to us, that our grandmother came back in the shape of a blackbird to watch over us.
I thought the idea was so touching, that it just got stuck in my mind and made me want to illustrate it in some way, and this was the perfect opportunity.

To me, there is something utterly fragile and sad about these birds, which is how I so often feel. I was also inspired by the song "Blackbird" by The Beatles, which also fits a lot on me.
Oh, and this is some sort of spirit-me, rather than just plain old boring me. But it is based on some photos of me.

This was really nice to do, and I'm content with the outcome. I hope you'll like it too. Wish me luck! ^^
