Under Bäckahästens makt - Under the power of the brook horseMy entry for the "Legends of the Sea" contest over at
Since I'm a sucker for mythology, and especially mythology tied to the water element, I had to enter. I also liked the idea of doing something related to Swedish folk lore, so I choose Bäckahästen (the brook horse). Bäckahästen is a creature who appears as a beautiful, white horse and lures people to ride on them. It's back can grow longer so it can hold enldless people on it's back, but once the humans are on, they run to their brook/river/lake and drowns them. I've always liked this myth X3
Oh well. Done with watercolours, ink, white gelpen, micron pen and some coloured pencils, edited and cropped in Photoshop.
Wish me luck!
Edit: This placed first in the judges choice in the contest!

This is beautiful and the story sounds familiar. Is the Brook Horse the Swedish version of the Scottish Kelpie, or is its own creature?
And I love Mythology. Especially the tales of how the world was made. I also wrote a story of creature similar to this, a Nykkjen. It's like a siren that dwells in lakes and lures people to drown beneath a garden of water lilies. Another version (Finland) of the Kelpie/Brook Horse is mentioned as well, its called a Nykkur.
If you're interested please read and tell me what you think.

Snyggt jobbat dotter. Bäckahästen är ibland just Näcken i hästskepnad men det kanske du visste. Lycka till.

I love the horse here - the mane is magnificently flowy, and the flower is a beautiful touch of color to add to the illusion of innocence the horse projects. I also adore how you did the water, and the reflections of the mountain.
