Description PROLOGUE:
========

It's with great pleasure that I can finally announce the completion of my first ever DEB package (or rather, any Linux package for that matter...)!

For practice I used the Vanguard cursor theme that my previous incarnation (C-chan) designed for the EeePCLinuxOS project (with obvious emphasis on usability in a small Netbook screen). The theme had only previously been packaged into the PCLinuxOS 2007 repository by my old friend and project lead Jmiahman -- that RPM is still accessible here:

However, I had always been interested in porting that theme into other distros, since few other cursor themes offer "flipped" versions for left-handed users.

Though DEB packaging seemed unnecessarily complicated at first, I eventually got the gist of its purpose and function (although I still think it could be a little simpler). And since I opted to package completed icons rather than sources and makefiles, it was easier still to fill out the required configuration files.

After a few hours of painstaking poking, prodding, experimentation and PGP fun, I finally got my DEB packaging kicked out by pbuilder. ^___^

There is still a lot I have to learn about the process and the DEB file itself has a few rough edges. But I think this is a significant first step on my road towards becoming a programmer.

I will continue practicing with and refining this file some more -- next up for sure I'd like to create my own RPM package of this, for use in Fedora, Mandriva and of course PCLOS '09. ^^

The Vanguard-cursor-theme DEB package can be downloaded here:

Since there are no makefiles or dependencies, chances are this might work on any DEB-based Distros.

No other package types are currently available yet, but the cursor theme can also be manually installed from this ZIP file:

The "installation" process is as easy as 'drag and drop' and should work on most Linux/BSD systems.

SYSTEMS TESTED SO FAR:
==================

Kubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty"
Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty" Netbook Remix
Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid"

haha, thanks. ^^

Although unless someone converts this old work of mine into a Windows cursor, I'd rather keep this a *Nix exclusive. Adds more of an incentive to explore new horizons.

I've been wanting to package themes too, so they don't end up messed up like my previous Xubuntu system. It's cursor changed size and theme depending on the window it was on.

Thank you! ^^

Can't believe it took me almost a year to package these myself, though... makes me feel lazy. ^^'
