EDIT: I also make custom plushies! Please check out the rest of my gallery!I hope this tutorial can come in handy for you all! Feel free to post questions and I will answer them by and by.
I believe you all can make wonderful plushies! <3
EDIT: Here are a few tips and tricks I have picked up from Redditors:
Eight_Quarter_Bit: "for those members without a lot of confidence in free-hand sketching eyes, I bet you could probably cheat and find a vector of MLP eyes, drop it into a document editor to set its dimensions on a page, and print it out as the pattern to go by. This would also make it easy to make sure both the left and right eye were identical but mirrored."
ghostway: "A couple suggestions/personal preferences:
- Instead of a generic felt-tip pen, there's a blue embroidery marker pen you can buy just about anywhere that has embroidery supplies. Doesn't stain, and even if it did, it washes right out with water. (There's a white pencil that does the same thing, but it's rubbish.)
- That said, I cheat horribly and use the reversed printout backing method for doing the outlines. But everything I do is just framed fabric, not plushes, so I don't know if that'd cause problems.
- When I do the outlines, I understitch and overstitch. That is, first I do the outline with one or two strands, and then I satin stitch over it to fill in the solid color, and then I go back and re-stitch the border around there (at four+ strands) with a straight stitch, or my new favourite, a modified split stitch. It's possibly overkill, but I don't want to run the risk of leaving a gap between the satin-stitched areas and the outline.
- For really tiny round areas, like the smallest white highlight on the eye, I prefer a french knot, pressed flat.
- Also, a note to anyone out there doing this for the first time: when filling in with the satin stitch, do the entire width of the area with each stitch; don't try to do it in a series of little centimeter-long stitches. I made that mistake on my first piece, possibly because I was transitioning from cross-stitch, and the result was really shoddy looking and just generally not good."

Yes, the loose fabric part is trick. Having the fabric stretched over a hoop is lovely and makes the whole experience less stressful. I hope it works out for you!

Haha, this whole time I've been doing hand sewing without the hoop XPPP and it's still somewhat effective. My recent Rarity's eyes and cutie mark was done with what I've been doing the whole time xp
Very informative though ,w,

This is amazing, I've been looking SOOO long for a hand embroidery tutorial like this for plushies since most of them seem to be done with machines, which I don't own or work with. xDDD So thank you very much for this, very well done and for the most part easy to understand.~

Great! I had a similar problem when I started-- I wasn't about to go out and buy a machine! This way works, if you have the patience.

Indeed, and I actually find doing sewing by hand to just be a lot more relaxing than anything by machine, even if it is quicker sometimes it doesn't mean it's more enjoyable, especially if you can get the same results in the end at half the cost.

I agree! I love to work with my hands. I think any sort of machine would just frustrate me.

That's exactly how I feel as well. To me I feel like I have a lot more control when doing it by hand than if I did it by machine. Last time I ever tried it the thread practically knotted everytime I tried making a stitch. >.<

I tried to be thorough just in case the readers literally know nothing about sewing.

It will KILL you hands to DEATH. Prepare for cramping! Haha. I think it's worth it, though.

It's just really time-consuming. Note step 17: watch a movie while embroidering!

I would probably need about... five movies.

Thank you! I have done cutie marks but have been too scared to do the eyes ;-;
Quick question though... If I did the eyes on a different piece of fabric (since I buck up, a lot), would you have any idea how best to attach it?

caashley In reply to RhapsodyPride [2012-05-01 00:14:40 +0000 UTC]
I have done this before. I just end up sewing the eyes onto the plushy afterwards. I think that ought to work! It looks a LOT better if you embroider it straight on the plush, but I can understand practicing first on another fabric.

When I have more practice I will... I just did so badly one some ponies cutiemarks... Like AJs... That well... I feel like it might ruin the plush if I did the eyes right on it XD;; And hand embroidering fleece is hard... I'm doing a lot better on felt
Thanks for getting back to me!

I would definitely say practising on felt is best. Felt is lovely and cheap! The great thing about minky (the stuff I use) is it is thick enough to hide the worst of your mistakes.

RhapsodyPride In reply to caashley [2012-05-01 14:14:46 +0000 UTC]
I have one project in fleece, 2 in felt but the eyes on the fleece one are going to be on felt for ease. Still on fabric and nicer looking than my painted details...
...I need to work on having less project ADD
One more question... How do you do the hair for Derpy? o.o The reason I haven't finished my recent Fleece Derpy is her hair and pulling it off to be stuffable is beyond me

caashley In reply to RhapsodyPride [2012-05-01 17:56:38 +0000 UTC]
The hair is made out of minky as well. I just drew the patterns for bangs, mane and tail, then cut out two versions of each to be sewn together. I only stuffed the tail, though.

I meant, how do you attach it to the head?

caashley In reply to RhapsodyPride [2012-05-01 23:36:21 +0000 UTC]
I just sewed it on, to be often. The great thing about minky is the hair is long enough to hide most small stitches.
